The Spickard R-2 Board of Education approved a salary increase for teachers and offered contracts for the 2008-2009 school year during a meeting held Monday evening.

Principal/Superintendent Lyle Best reported that the board approved the certified salary schedule, which includes a 4.3 percent increase to the base, setting the base at $24,000. The board tabled the discussion of non-certified salaries until next month.
Board members reviewed the amount of mileage reimbursement paid out in the 2006-2007 school year compared to the current year. The board discussed whether or not to use the school van for school business in order to lower the amount of mileage paid out or whether it would be better to sell the van. The issue will be discussed again next month, as will bus bids.
In other business, the board was addressed by patrons and staff members regarding a field trip last week to Kansas City and approved the MARCIT health insurance rates for the 2008-2009 school. Premium rates are $418 per employee. Best presented the program evaluations for the Title I, Title II and Title IV programs and reviewed one bid to lower the ceilings in the building. It was agreed to receive more bids on the project before making any decisions.
Traci Willis provided a building technology update to the board, addressing current and future needs and projects. The board approved the installation of a Smart board system and teacher workstation in the computer lab adjacent to the library.
It was also agreed to purchase concrete and needed supplies to put in a small basketball court on the playground, as well as a ramp to access the playground. The board also discussed other general maintenance projects that will be addressed this summer.
Following an executive session, the board voted to offer a teaching contract to Laurie Frisbie for the 2008-2009 school year. Letters of intent for employment for the 2008-2009 school year were approved for Jonine Jaycox, Makella Hagan, Mindy Wilson, Carla Roberts and Crystal Wilson. A technology stipend was approved for Traci Willis for the 2008-2009 school year.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 16.
