“I told the girls if you want to qualify, you’re going to have to win a tournament,” Coach Paul Derry said. “The girls responded well, our bats came around and we got the win.”
The Trentonettes opened the weekend with a 7-0 win over the Independence Diamonds in pool play.
Aubrey Utley pitched a gem, taking the win on the mound. She allowed no runs and struck out 10 in the contest.
Utley was backed by solid offense as well. Amber Maberry went one-for-three at the plate and drove in two runs. Vanessa Lentz and Crystal Pash each drove in a run as well to aid the Trentonettes’ offense.
In game two, the Trentonettes won 7-3 over the Raymore-Peculiar Storm. Coach Derry ran Jennifer McCoy out on the hill for the start. McCoy took the win, allowing three runs while striking out four.
The Trentonettes again had a good game at the plate. McCoy was two-for-two with two RBI’s. Lindsey Derry, Lentz, Pash and Hannah Adkins all had one RBI each.
When bracket play began, the Trentonettes continued to dominate their opponents. The Carrollton Poison was their first victim, a team the Trentonettes defeated 10-0.
Utley returned to the hill to take the win. She threw another shutout and fanned nine in the game.
Offensively, the Trentonettes ran up 10 runs. Maberry and McCoy continued to be driving forces for the team, driving in two runs each. Claire Adkins and Pash also had two RBI’s each. The Trentonettes’ other two runs were driven in by Claire Busby and Samantha Fair.
In what turned out to be the last game of the tournament, the Trentonettes defeated the Sedalia Havoc 7-0.
Utley threw her third shutout of the tournament, striking out 15 batters in the process to give her a total of 34 for the tournament.
“Aubrey did a good job,” Derry said. “It takes all nine, 10 or 11 players to win the game, though. I’m not going to take anything away from Aubrey and I’m not going to take anything away from the other girls. Aubrey did everything I asked of her and pitched very well.”
Pash and McCoy each had a bases-clearing triple to give them three RBI’s each in the game. Utley was two-for-three with a double and the team’s final RBI.
Following the win over Sedalia, the rains came, ending the tournament. The Trentonettes and the Raymore-Peculiar Storm were the only two teams left in the winner’s bracket. The tournament championship was awarded to the team that gave up the fewest runs, making the Trentonettes the winners. The win qualified the Trentonettes for the USSSA World Series, which will be held on July 21-26.
The Trentonettes will return to action on May 24 for a one-day tournament in Unionville. The 12-and-under and 14-and-under Trentonettes teams will also be in action in Unionville that day as well.
