“This was a good competitive match for both teams,” Coach Mike Bosley said. “The whole team played as well as we have all season and it was nice to finish up our regular season with a win.”
It was also a banner night for the Bulldogs’ two seniors, Russ Murphy and Ryan Wright. Murphy got the varsity off on the right foot win an 8-4 win at the number one singles spot and also won his doubles match, teaming with Kolton Chenoweth to take an 8-5 victory. Wright, meanwhile, dominated his Carrollton opponent in the number two junior varsity match with a 6-0 win.
“Our two seniors, Russ and Ryan, both had good matches to close out their seasons at home,” Bosley said.
Murphy’s win jump-started the varsity, but Carrollton hung around in the early going. Kile Brewer fell in a close 8-6 contest while Chenoweth grabbed an 8-6 win. Travis Bruner fell 8-4, leaving the two teams tied at 2-2 after the first wave of matches.
The Bulldogs’ five and six players put Trenton ahead with a pair of strong matches. Cody Brown delivered an 8-5 victory, while Josh Ishmael scored an impressive 8-1 win to place the Bulldogs out in front, 4-2.
Entering doubles play, Trenton needed just one win to take the dual. The Bulldogs got that victory in the first doubles match with Murphy and Chenoweth’s win. The Bulldogs also picked up a win in the number two doubles match when Bruner and Brewer took a close 9-8 win over their Carrollton foes with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Trenton’s Brown and Ishmael fell 8-6 in the final doubles match, making the final score 6-3 Bulldogs.
The win gave the varsity a final record of 6-10 for the regular season.
The JV also picked up a win, knocking off Carrollton, 4-3.
Jadeth McCloud won 6-1 at the number one spot and Wright’s 6-0 win at the number two spot put Trenton up 2-0 early.
Andrew Harrison suffered a 6-3 loss that got Carrollton’s JV on the board, but the Bulldogs responded with two wins to seal the match. Patrick Harrison grabbed a 6-1 win in singles action and the doubles team of Jonathan McCully and Colton Wyant took a 6-4 win.
Carrollton closed the dual with two wins as the team of Christian Fuller and Colton McClure fell 6-3 and Jacoby Knapp lost in singles play 6-0. It wasn’t enough to derail the Bulldogs, however, as Trenton held on for the 4-3 win.
Trenton’s next action on the court will be on Friday, when the Bulldogs travel to St. Joseph for the district tournament.
