Boxing Club Competes

Apr 14, 2008 | Sports & Recreation

The Trenton Boxing Club sent four members to Paola, KS over the weekend for a smoker.
Making their boxing debuts were eight-year-old Zack King, who lost a tough three-round decision to Darrius Aliant of Turner, KS, and 11-year-old Cheyenne Welch, who lost when the fight was stopped by the referee in the second round.

The other two members of the boxing club brought home wins. Twelve-year-old Garrett Runnells won a very close three-round decision over Julian Galvin of Turner, KS. Trenton’s final fighter, Nina Baker, took a convincing win over Paola’s Ellen Verhague, who is nationally-ranked. Baker received a bloody nose toward the end of the first round, but was okayed by the doctor to finish the fight after determining the nose was not broken. It was a measure of revenge for Baker, who lost to Verhague in her first fight last February in Trenton.
The Trenton Boxing Club will return to action on April 26-27 in Lawrence, KS for the Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma Junior Olympics. On the card from the Trenton Boxing Club are Runnells, Justin Collins and Fredrick Pannell, all of whom are returning champions.
