The classes will be held on Saturday, May 31 and Saturday, June 7 in the large conference room of the hospital. Safe Sitter is a medically-accurate program that teaches adolescents how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. The goal of the classes is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by babysitters.
During the course, students will get hands-on training in basic lifesaving techniques and receive tips to make them more confident care givers. They will learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door, and when and how to call for help. They will also receive information on child development and age-appropriate activities and also learn about the business aspects of babysitting.
To successfully complete the program, students will have to pass a practical and written test to show they have mastered the concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
There is a $40 cost for the two-day program. To register, parents are asked to call Tina Capeder at 660-359-5621, ext. 200 by Friday, May 16.
