The Trenton High School Bulldogs boys tennis team ran into a buzz saw to open the 2008 season as they fell to Benton on Monday, 9-0, in St. Joseph. A young and inexperienced Bulldog team faced off with a Cardinal squad that returned all six varsity players from a year ago.
Tennis Team Opens With Benton
“Benton has the same top six as last year and they have a lot of experience and talent,” Coach Mike Bosley said. “We were happy to get the season started, but we need a lot of playing.”
Benton flexed its muscles early and often, winning the top four matches by a combined score of 32-0. Trenton’s Cody Brown gave Trenton its closest match in the number five spot, picking up four games in an 8-4 loss. Trenton lost the final singles match, 8-1, before moving on to doubles. Trenton’s luck didn’t change much in doubles action as the Cardinals took all three matches to complete the sweep.
Trenton took the loss, but gained some valuable playing time and experience.
Trenton established a season record of 0-1. The Bulldogs will take another shot at getting into the win column on Thursday when they host Kirksville at the THS tennis courts for their home opener. Start time for the match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Trenton’s junior varsity team was also in action, losing 5-3.
Trenton fell in the first three singles matches, all by a score of 6-0. The Bulldogs bounced back, however, winning the final three singles matches to tie the overall score at 3-3 going into doubles play.
Colton Wyant picked up a 7-6 win in the number four spot, Colton McClure won 6-3 at the number five position and Jacoby Knapp grabbed a 7-5 win in the number six spot. Benton won the first two doubles matches, however, to seal the JV win.
