Gilman was strong in the opening minutes and jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter. The Hawks did not let up in the second quarter, taking complete control of the contest with a 17-5 run that gave them a commanding 33-14 first-half lead.
The Shamrocks’ offense began to find ways to score in the second half, but they could not stop the Gilman City offense. The Hawks outscored the Shamrocks by seven in the third quarter, giving them a 51-25 lead with one quarter remaining. Gilman cruised through the final frame to grab the win and a trip to the second round of the district tournament.
“I thought we played very well and it was good to shoot as well as we did,” Head Coach Brent Burke said. “All nine of our players scored for us tonight.”
The Hawks were led by Blake Johnson, who got things done down low with 17 points and nine rebounds. Cody Griffith continued to come on strong down the stretch with another double-double. Griffith put up 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and swatted four shots. Chris Hulett rounded out the Hawks’ double-figure performers, scoring 10 points while dishing out three assists.
The Hawks moved to 15-10 on the season with the win.
Gilman City’s next action will come on Wednesday when they face Ridgeway at 8:30 p.m. at the KCC in Trenton.
