The Trenton R-9 School District, along with the Grundy County Health Department and Dr. Alissa Wiggins, will be conducting a scoliosis screening program to detect children with a curvature of the spine on Monday, Feb. 25.
Scoliosis Screening Set
The secreeming will be done for all sixth, seventh and eigth grade boys and girls. Guardians are asked to notify the school nurse (in writing) prior to Feb. 25 if their child is currently under active treatment for a spinal condition or if they would rather not have your child screened.
The procedure for screening is a simple one in which the screener looks at the child’s back in a standing position and in the forward bending position. If a child has a suspected curvature, the guardian will be notified by letter and asked to take the child to a physician for further evaluation.
According to available information, 7 to 10 children in every 100 may develop scoliosis and one to three will require treatment. If this condition is detected early, and appropriately treated, progressive spinal deformity can be prevented.
