“My work draws heavily on my agricultural background,” said Roberts. “Through the creation of my artwork, I link with my family’s farming roots.”
Raised on a farm in southwestern Iowa, Roberts is intimately acquainted with the cycles of growth and change in the agricultural field that can be universally applied to the cycle of life. Prior to his career as an artist, he worked on the family farm and as a production research assistant at a major seed company. With the retirement of his parents from the family farm, he turned to exploring and connecting with his agricultural roots through art, using materials often found in farm settings to create somewhat abstracted forms.
“The main imagery utilized in creating my sculptures is that of the granary,” said Roberts. “I evolve the granary image through a process of connecting ideas with images and/or symbols of fertility. Through the metamorphosis of form and meaning, a new object is generated.”
In addition to his career as a professional artist, Roberts is a professor of art at Central College in Pella where he teaches sculpture, three-dimensional design, ceramics and glassblowing.
“I am very excited to bring Mr. Roberts’ work to NCMC and Trenton,” said Rider Gallery Director Jim Norris. “It’s great to have another fantastic sculpture exhibit in the gallery, and I believe that his agricultural themes will really strike a chord with our community.”
“Sculpture by Brian Roberts” is now open and runs through Tuesday, March 18.
The artist will present a gallery talk on March 18 at 11 a.m. in the gallery, which is located in the Frey Administration Building.
Regular hours at the Rider Art Gallery are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as selected weekend and evening hours.
