Lady Pirates
The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead against AIB. Both teams were playing solid defense, but a three by Trisha Ireland put the Lady Pirates up 12-8. From that point on it was all NCMC as the Lady Pirates began to pull away from their overmatched opponents. NCMC continued to show the way throughout the second half, going on for the win.
“This was a good win for us,” Head Coach Jenni Croy said. “It gives us momentum heading into the Cottey College game having won two straight.”
The Lady Pirates were led offensively by Cassie Hunt, who scored a team-high 18 points. Hunt also pulled down seven rebounds. Starr Taylor was very effective as well, racking up 17 points. Jodi Yocum provided a team-high five assists for the Lady Pirates.
With the win, the Lady Pirates improved to 9-15 on the season.
The Lady Pirates will be back on the court Wednesday night when they host Cottey College at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Pirates
The NCMC men kept the ball rolling as they captured their fifth consecutive victory. The Pirates grabbed control of the contest in the opening minutes and were never in danger as they cruised to a 16-point win.
The Pirates were able to slow the pace of the game down quite a bit from their previous game, in which they took a 100-93 win. The Pirates used a lot of shot clock management and worked the ball around, taking their time to find open shots.
“This game was a good opportunity,” Head Coach Steve Richman said. “We weren’t out to demolish anybody. We were able to work on some things and everyone on the team was able to contribute to this win.”
Jacob Bottcher was the Pirates’ leading scorer, putting up a team-high 21 points. Bottcher also pulled down 13 rebounds, giving himself a double-double. Martin Roper also scored a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Byron Bundy and Brandon Thomas each put up 11 points as well. Bundy added eight steals and Thomas had six assists.
The win improved the Pirates’ record to 11-12 on the season.
The Pirates’ next contest will be Saturday, when they play host to State Fair Community College at Trenton. The Lady Pirates will also be in action against State Fair. Tip time for the women’s contest is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at around 7:30.
