The Trenton High School wrestling team took home second place in the Lexington Dual Wrestling Tournament Saturday.
THS Wrestlers Take Second In Lexington
Three pools of three teams competed in the tournament with the top team in each pool advancing into the championship pool. The Bulldogs took a 56-16 win over Lawson and a 40-30 win over Lexington to win their pool and advance into the championship pool. Trenton fell to Brookfield, the eventual tournament champion, 43-23, but beat Clinton, 48-25, to secure a second-place finish.
“This was one of our best performances of this season,” Coach Bill Hill said. “We were open at 112 as always, and were also without Bruce Fair (103) and yet we still finished second in a field of nine solid teams.”
Trenton faced Lawson in its first dual of the day and looked very impressive, winning 56-16.
After going down 6-0 due to being open at the 112-pound weight class, Trenton took two matches by fall. Corey Holloway and Jason Bailey scored wins by pin to put Trenton up 12-6. The Bulldogs would never relinquish the lead as they pulled away throughout the remainder of the match. James Deaver, Kody Hicks, Kade Kinney, Ethan Tabbert and Zach Kinnison all scored wins by fall as well.
Trenton followed up its dominating win with another solid performance that clinched their pool. The Bulldogs handed Lexington, the host school, a 40-30 loss, putting themselves into the championship pool.
Trenton trailed by as much as 21-12 halfway through the match, but closed strongly to take the win.
Wins by forfeit by Deaver and Kody Hill got the Bulldogs back into the match. A win by major decision from Kade Kinney at the 171-pound weight class put Trenton up 28-24. The lead was short-lived, however, and Lexington scored a win by fall over Justin Brinser in the 189-pound weight class. Down 30-28, Tabbert and Kinnison came through in a big way. Both scored wins by fall to seal the match for the Bulldogs.
In the championship pool, the Bulldogs ran across a tough Brookfield team and suffered their first loss of the day, 43-23.
Trenton won only four matches, with Mitchell Bailey scoring the team’s only win by fall in the 130-pound weight class.
Trenton rebounded well, however, against Clinton in their final dual of the day. With second place on the line, the Bulldogs came through with a 23-point win.
Trenton fell behind 14-0 in the early going, but Mitchell Bailey continued to wrestle well and got the Bulldogs on the board with a win by fall.
Trenton had the momentum from that point on. Deaver, Hill and Hicks scored three straight wins by fall to put the Bulldogs over the top. Brinser, Tabbert and Kinnison all had wins by forfeit to close out the match and give Trenton a win and the second-place title.
“We had a good team effort,” Hill said. “Everyone did their part to score team points and minimize the team scoring of our opponents.”
Next up for the Bulldogs will be districts in Cameron. Districts begin on Friday at 6 p.m. and conclude on Saturday. Action on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m.
