The Newtown-Harris boys continue to roll as they picked up their 18th win of the season with a 57-43 win over Putnam County in non-conference basketball action Thursday night at Unionville.
The N-H girls, meanwhile, got a spanking at the hands of the Putnam County Lady Midgets, 66-28.
Tigers Win 18th Game, Girls Fall
Boys
Although Newtown-Harris won the scoring battle in each of the four quarters of the contest, the Midgets of Putnam County kept it close in the early going.
The Tigers held on to a 14-10 lead after one period of play, then stretched the advantage by five more points to put themselves up at halftime, 33-24. The third quarter saw both teams battle for points, with Newtown winning the war, 10-9, and going out to a 43-33 advantage to start the final eight minutes of play.
The Tigers hit 50 percent from the field, connecting on 22-of-44. They also hit 11-of-15 free throws.
Canaan Fairley led Newtown in scoring with 19 points while also grabbing four assists and four steals. Brandon Coin added 14 points and had three blocked shots. KJ Cool and Levi Wollenzein scored seven points each. Tyler Busick had nine rebouns to pace the Tigers along with five assists.
Torey Weston scored 15 points to lead Putnam County.
Newtown-Harris is now 18-0 on the season.
Girls
A 25-8 first quarter pounding from Putnam County spelled doom for the Newtown-Harris girls, who could never dig themselves out of the offensive hole.
The Lady Midgets dominated Newtown throughout the contest, taking a 37-15 lead at halftime. Putnam also was up after three quarters of play, 50-22.
The Lady Tigers found it hard to get any points, hitting just 10-of-47 from the floor. They only went to the free throw line six times, hitting three.
Jessica Huffman was the leading scorer for Newtown and the only player in double-digits with 13 points. She also had five rebounds and seven steals. The Lady Tigers also got five rebounds each from Jaimie Robinson, Chelsea Daum and Haley Reed. Deanna Peck had three assists to lead the team.
Putnam County was led by Katie Steele with 23 points.
Newtown-Harris is 13-5 on the season with the loss.
Both the boys and girls are involved in the HDC Conference Tournament being played at Pattonsburg.
The girls, seeded third, will play at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of the North Daviess-Grundy R-5 contest. The number-one seeded boys will play at 5:30 p.m. on Monday against the winner of Saturday’s Winston-Tri-County matchup.
