Newtown got a leg up in the first quarter, going on a 14-6 run to open the game. The Tigers really grabbed control in the second quarter, however, as they outscored the Panthers 31-1.
“We got caught up in a fast tempo in the second quarter,” Grundy R-5 Head Coach Les Jackson said. “Newtown quickly took advantage of that and took control of the game.”
At the half, Newtown had the game by the throat, leading 45-7.
The game slowed down a little in the third quarter as neither team scored in double digits. Newtown added three points to its lead and went into the fourth quarter up 54-13. Both teams scored 12 points in the final frame, giving the Tigers the win.
Newtown’s KJ Cool was the game’s top scorer, putting up 24 points. Canaan Fairley played a solid supporting role, scoring nine.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Bryce Rains, who scored 11 points. Rains also collected four steals in the contest. Tyler Jackson added nine points and nine rebounds to the Panthers’ effort.
The Newtown boys’ record rolled to 12-0 while Grundy dropped to 3-6.
Grundy will return to action in the Milan Tournament on Thursday night in the loser’s bracket, while Newtown will continue play on the winner’s side of the bracket.
The Grundy R-5 girls were also in action, suffering an 85-20 loss to Schuyler County in their opening round game. Heather Vivone led the way for the Lady Panthers, scoring a team-high 16 points.
The Lady Panters, now 0-10 on the year will be in action again tonight at the Milan Tournament, where they will face off with Green City.
