Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs again struggled in the early going of the first quarter and found themselves down 10-0 after the first five minutes. A basket by Aimee Gutshall with 2:51 left in the quarter got the Lady Bulldogs on the board.
Savannah’s press was an issue for Trenton, and the Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over several times in the first quarter. After a quarter of play, Trenton trailed 13-6.
Savannah jumped out with another big run, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 10-2 to open the second quarter. By halftime the Lady Savages had built a commanding 40-13 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to put out a strong effort, but Savannah was on fire beyond the arc, burying several three’s. Going into the final quarter Trenton trailed 53-22.
The clock ran continuously throughout the final quarter as Savannah went on to take the 64-24 win.
Despite the lop-sided score, Head Coach Quinten Albrecht was pleased with the effort his team put out against a very strong opponent.
“I’m happy with the way the girls came out and played,” Albrecht said. “I’m not necessarily happy with the outcome, but I am pleased with the effort they put out. Savannah is one of the toughest teams we will see this year.”
Lindsey Derry and Gutshall each put up seven points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
Trenton dropped to 2-7 on the season with the loss.
Bulldogs
After going on a five-game winning streak earlier this season, the Bulldogs had dropped two straight. Trenton was able to get back on track Saturday night in the Ketcham Community Center as they took a 56-46 win over Savannah.
Trenton got things going early jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Juniors Ryan Wade and Kameron Alley then hit back-to-back three-pointers to push Trenton’s lead to 10-0 and force Savannah to take a time out. Savannah got on the board, but the Bulldogs held an 11-4 lead when time ran out in the first quarter.
Trenton continued to play a high energy game, running the ball up and down the court. The Bulldogs put up 17 points in the second quarter, allowing them to take a 28-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter Savannah crawled back into the game, cutting Trenton’s lead to four.
Leading 31-27, the Bulldogs got a big boost from Tyler Brinkley, who hit four of six free throws in the late stages of the third quarter to allow Trenton to pull back out to a 37-28 lead going into the final quarter.
Savannah again mounted a charge in the fourth, but back-to-back steals and layups by De’Andre Vandevender put Trenton up comfortably, 52-41 with just 1:20 left to play. Trenton held on, coming away with the 56-46 victory.
“Overall I felt we played one of our best games of the year,” Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We played with a lot of intensity and were able to play our style of game.”
Trenton was led by Alley who finished the evening with a team-high 14 points. Vandevender chipped in nine to aid the Bulldogs as well.
Trenton’s record improved to 6-3 on the year with the win.
Both the girls and boys teams will return to the court on Jan. 11, when they host Marceline, at home, in the THS gym. Tip time for the girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with boys action to follow.
