Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the first four minutes of the first and third quarters, something Head Coach Quentin Albrecht felt led to his team’s downfall.
“We have to find a way to start the first and third quarters with a little more intensity,” Albrecht said. “The first four minutes of the first and third quarters killed us.”
Richmond came out strong, opening the game with a 10-0 run. The Lady Spartans extended their lead to 14-3 before the Lady Bulldogs began to battle back.
Trenton closed out the first quarter on a 7-4 run cutting the lead to 18-10 at the end of the first eight minutes.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to battle back in the second quarter. A three by Lindsey Derry and excellent passing by Trenton cut Richmond’s lead to 21-17. Back-to-back buckets by Aimee Gutshall and Rebekah Capeder tied the game at 21-21.
Derry dished out an assist to Gutshall and then took a steal coast-to-coast for another layup. At the half, Trenton held a 25-22 lead and had the momentum.
Like the start of the game, Trenton came out sluggish in the second half. For the first four minutes the Lady Bulldogs struggled mightily to break through Richmond’s full court pressure.
Richmond outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-5 to take a 36-30 lead into the final quarter.
Trenton closed the gap to two, but was forced to foul late in the game. Richmond hit their free throws, taking the 50-43 win in the process.
“We were very dissapointed,” Albrecht said. “We felt that was a winnable game and we gave it away.”
Trenton was led by Derry, who scored a team-high 13 points. Capeder chipped in 10 and Gutshall added seven.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 2-6 on the year with the loss.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys couldn’t find a way to win either, as they fell 55-39.
Trenton jumped out to an early lead behind two three-pointers by Kameron Alley. Richmond quickly reeled them in, however, as they battled back and took the lead midway through the first quarter.
Trenton caught a break when Jim Weaver was fouled on a half court three at the buzzer. Weaver hit two-of-three free throws to tie the game at 14-14 heading into the second quarter.
Richmond pulled out to a 25-20 lead in the second quarter as the Spartans grabbed control of the tempo of the game.
Kyle Hoyt was strong in the post for the Bulldogs in the early going of the second half, but Richmond pushed the pace and extended their lead to 43-30 with eight minutes to go. Trenton struggled to find the hoop in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs went five minutes without scoring a single point to start the final quarter of play. De’Andre Vandevender caught fire in the late stages of the game, but it was too little, too late as Trenton fell, 55-39.
The Bulldogs were led by Hoyt, who had 11 points and Alley, who had 10.
Trenton’s record on the season dropped to 5-3 with the loss.
Both Trenton teams will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 as they continue play in the NCMC Holiday Shoot-Out at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton. Both squads will face Savannah, with girls action tipping off at 4 p.m. and the boys to follow at 5:30.
