Newtown Runs Rampant On Cainsville

The Newtown-Harris Tigers traveled to Cainsville Wednesday night and came away with a pair of huge wins. The Lady Tigers easily handled the Redettes, taking a 61-14 win, while the boys hit triple-digits, winning 101-27.

Lady Tigers
The Lady Tigers found scoring easy to come by in their matchup. Newtown hit its stride early in the contest, going up 10-4 in the first quarter. It was the second quarter, however, that sealed the fate of the Redettes. Newtown closed out the first half on a 22-2 run giving the Lady Tigers a 32-6 halftime lead.
The third quarter was another big one for the Lady Tigers as they went on a 19-0 run to bury Cainsville even deeper. With one quarter to play, Newtown held a 51-6 lead.
Newtown cruised through the final quarter, clinching the victory.
The Lady Tiger defense was very solid throughout the game. Cainsville only shot 19 percent from the floor while the Lady Tigers hit shots at a 42 percent clip.
Four Lady Tigers finished the night with double-digits, but it was Jessica Huffman leading the way with a game-high 14 points. Huffman also dished out seven assists in the contest and collected 10 steals to give herself a double-double.
Haley Reed and Deanna Peck were right behind Huffman, scoring 13 points apiece. Emily Wollenzien also hit double figures, scoring 10.
As a team, Newtown collected 28 steals and forced the Redettes into 35 turnovers.
The Lady Tigers advanced to 7-1 with the win and 3-0 in HDC action.
Tigers
The Tigers put on an incredible display of basketball, dominating an overmatched Cainsville team for the victory.
Newtown was too quick for Cainsville and it showed right from the start. The Tigers ran the floor well during the game’s first eight minutes and pulled out to a 35-8 lead. Newtown continued to pour it on in the second quarter, scoring 31 more points. At the half, the Tigers had built an insurmountable 66-18 margin.
Newtown opened the second half with a 28-2 run through the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 94-20 lead going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth period, both teams scored seven points, giving the Tigers the victory.
Six Newtown-Harris Tigers scored double-figures. Canaan Fairley led the way for the Tigers with 18 points, eight assists and five steals.
Levi Wollenzien scored 15 points while T.J. Ireland finished with 14, KJ Cool had 13, Tyler Busick had 12 and Brandon Coin had 10 points.
Of Newtown’s 11 players, 10 scored in the contest.
Cool also racked up nine assists and six steals. Ireland led the attack on the boards with 11 rebounds, giving him a double-double. Coin had eight rebounds.
The Tigers outrebounded the Redmen 44-32 in the contest.
Newtown was on fire from the field, hitting 44-of-76 shots from the field, a 58 percent mark.
Cainsville could not hit from the floor at all. In addition to 40 turnovers, the Redmen hit just 23 percent of their shots.
The win kept Newtown’s undefeated season intact, moving them to 8-0 on the year and 2-0 in HDC action.
Both Newtown-Harris teams will return to action tonight as they travel to Mercer for an HDC Conference rivalry game with the Cardinals. Tipoff for the girls game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with the boys game to follow.
