Gilman City And Grundy Boys Grab Wins

The Gilman City Hawks and Grundy R-5 Panthers boys basketball teams each took wins Friday night. The Hawks overwhelmed Pattonsburg with a 63-36 win, while the Panthers went to 2-0 in HDC play with a 54-41 win over Winston.

Gilman City
The Hawks looked like a well-oiled machine Friday night as they dismantled the Pattonsburg Panthers, 63-36.
Gilman came out with a press and forced several turnovers from Pattonsburg. The Hawks pulled out to a 22-12 lead after just a quarter of play.
Gilman’s defense stepped up in the second quarter as they held the Panthers to just one point in the entire eight minutes prior to halftime. Gilman scored 11 points of their own to take a 33-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Gilman continued to play well in the third quarter and held a 44-21 lead going into the final quarter of play. The Hawks buried the Panthers in the final frame to take the 63-36 win and advance to 2-2 on the year. The game was the Hawks’ first HDC action of the year and gave them a 1-0 record in conference play.
As usual the Hawks were very balanced with 10 different players scoring in the contest. Blake Johnson and Bryant Elder led the way with 11 points each.
“Our defensive intensity was great all night,” Hawks’ Head Coach Brent Burke commented. “We shot a lot better at our first home game this year.”
The Lady Hawks were also in action and won as well. No information was provided as of press time. The Lady Hawks currently sit at 3-1 on the year and are 1-0 in HDC Confgerence play.
The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday night when they host Tri-County in Gilman City. Tipoff will follow the girls game which starts at 6 p.m.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Panthers continued to look better as they won their second-straight contest. This time the Panthers toppled Winston, 54-41.
A fast first quarter led to a 17-13 lead for the Panthers. The second and third quarters were big for the Panthers as they outscored Winston 17-9 in the second and 16-9 in the third. The scoring outburst by the Panthers gave them a secure 50-31 lead with just one quarter to go. Winston made a run but came up well short as the Panthers held on to the 54-41 victory.
“This was one of our better defensive efforts,” Head Coach Les Jackson said.
The Panthers were led by Jordan Whitney, who had a career-high 25 points. Whitney also added nine rebounds and six steals. Bryce Rains also hit double figures, scoring 12 points and Tyler Jackson had six points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Panthers moved to 2-5 on the season and boosted their HDC Conference record to 2-0.
The Lady Panthers were also in action, but no information was made available as of press time.
The Grundy boys will return to action on Dec. 27 when they face Green City in the Ketcham Community Center for the NCMC Holiday Shootout at 10:30 a.m.
