Bulldogs
Trenton and Princeton came out and put on a good show in the first quarter. The two squads battled back-and-forth throughout the first eight minutes. At the end of the quarter, Trenton held on to a slim 15-14 lead.
Trenton took control of the game in the second quarter. The Bulldogs went on a 22-12 run in the second period to push their lead to 37-26 at the half.
Princeton closed the gap to eight in the third quarter, but Trenton got some good shooting from the floor in the fourth quarter, allowing the Bulldogs to hold on for the win.
Trenton was put on the free throw line 39 times in the game, but only hit 23 of the charity shots. Trenton made up for the bad free throw night with a solid night shooting from the floor as they hit 65 percent.
“We put them on the line way too much to win,” Princeton Head Coach Dave Richman said. “(Trenton) did a good job on the boards and hit some big three’s when they needed them.”
Trenton had four players hit double figures in the game. Michael Kurtz led the way with 20 points and Kameron Alley was right behind him with 17. Alley was solid at the free-throw line as well, going 9-for-10. Kyle Hoyt added 13 and De’Andre Vandevender had 10.
“We want a lot of people to step up and score,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We have a lot of people who can score and that is something we want to build on. We want to try and get five or six guys in double figures.”
Princeton was led by Jordan Richman, who had a team-high 16 points. Richman also racked up 10 rebounds, giving him a double-double. The Tigers also got good contributions from Cory Teeter, who had 14 points, and Ethan Stark, who had 12.
Trenton improved to 3-1 with the win.
Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs hit a bump in their road to improvement with a loss to Princeton.
The Lady Bulldogs came out of the gates slowly, scoring just two points in the entire first quarter. Trenton’s defense was still its strong suit as the Lady Bulldogs held Princeton to just eight points.
Trailing 8-2 going into the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs began working their way back into the game. Trenton outscored the Lady Tigers 12-10 in the second, cutting Princeton’s lead to 18-14 at the half.
Princeton opened the third quarter with a 16-11 run to boost the lead to 34-25 going into the final quarter. The Lady Tigers then went on a 15-6 run to close out the game and hand the Lady Bulldogs their third loss of the year.
“We are struggling on the offensive end right now,” Trenton Head Coach Quinten Albrecht said. “We need someone to step up and take the big shot.”
Albrecht also felt his team’s defense was a little off from past games.
“Defensively we were a step slower than we were last week,” Albrecht said. “That must improve for us to be successful.”
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Emily Smith, who had 11 points, and Rebekah Capeder, who had 10.
Trenton fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Both Trenton teams return to the court tonight as they face off with Hamilton in the home opener in Trenton. Girls’ action kicks off at 6 o’clock, with the boys game to follow.
Princeton’s next game will be Friday, when they travel to Milan.
