The Trenton High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Marceline for the Marceline Tournament on Saturday.
Trenton was one of 11 teams competing in the tournament and came away with five wrestlers medaling in their respective pools.
Five Trenton Wrestlers Medal In Marceline
In the A pool, Trenton’s Kody Hill took third in the 152-pound class, Kody Hicks took third in the 160-pound class and Ethan Tabbert took second in the 215-pound class.
In the B pool, Jason Bailey took first in the 130-pound class and Bryan Johnson was second in the 285-pound class.
“The tournament was all about getting experience on the mat,” Coach Bill Hill said. “Our A pool kids generally wrestled against state champions and medalists all day long. That can be tough on win/loss records, but it is what we do to get better.”
Trenton had a total of 12 wrestlers in action in the tournament and compiled a combined record of 17-27 on the day.
A Pool
Trevor Whitely went 0-4 in the 119-pound class. Whitley lost his first match to Shane Twenter of Boonville by fall at the 3:14 mark of the second period; his second match to Cole Ames of Lawson by technical fall, 17-0; his third match to Ryan Mangon of Whitfield by fall at the 0:30 mark of the first period; and his final match to Preston Maples of Richmond by fall at the 2:47 mark of the second period.
Corey Holloway was also 0-4 on the day in the 125-pound class. He lost his first match to Brandon Thalter of Higginsville by major decision, 17-6; his second match to Jordan Orr of Brookfield by fall at the 3:24 mark in the second period; his third match to Johnny Lemmond (no school listed) by regular decision, 11-7; and his final match to Isaac Enriquez of Raytown South by regular decision, 14-7.
Mitchell Bailey was 0-3 on the day in the 135-pound class. He lost his first match to Tyler Holloway of Brookfield by technical fall, 23-8; his second match to Reny Reis of Richmond by regular decision, 7-0; and his third match to Austin Paalher of Marceline by regular decision, 12-9.
Kody Hill went 2-3 in the 152-pound class. Hill won his first match over Corey Harrington of Brookfield by fall at the 3:33 mark of the second period and his second match over Caleb Vanlue of Lawson by fall at the 0:33 mark of the second period. Hill lost his third match to Wes Gorham of Richmond by regular decision, 9-2; his fourth match to Cree Foster of Higginsville by regular decision, 7-6; and his fifth match to Jason Ott of Whitfield by technical fall, 19-4.
Kody Hicks was 1-2 in the 160-pound class. He won his second match over Anthony Barnes of Raytown South by fall at the 3:00 mark of the second period. Hicks lost his first match to Austin Evans of Brookfield by fall at the 2:29 mark of the second period, and his third match to Colby Bowles of Richmond by fall at the 5:38 mark of the third period.
Ethan Tabbert rounded out Trenton’s A pool wrestlers with a 3-1 showing in the 215-pound class. Tabbert won his first match over Jon Swift of Brookfield by major decision, 11-1, and his third match over Devon Mellow of Lawson by regular decision, 15-7. Tabbert lost his second match to David Haight of Richmond by fall at the 0:21 mark in the first period.
B Pool
Bruce Fair went 2-2 in the 112-pound class. He won his first match over Shaune Pennington of Lawson by fall at the 0:47 mark of the first period, and his third match over Brett Willman of Lawson by fall at the 1:24 mark of the first period. He lost his second match to Kevin Mathis of Higginsville by technical fall, 19-2, and his fourth match to Gavin Welch of Boonville by fall at the 2:45 mark of the second period.
Jason Bailey went 4-0 with four pins in the 130-pound class. He won his first match over Brandon Cruthers of Raytown South by fall at the 1:39 mark of the second period; his second match over Kane Southwick of Richmond by fall at the 3:15 mark of the second period; his third match over Jonathan Olvera of Higginsville by fall at the 2:34 mark of the second period; and his fourth match over Ryland Sims of Lawson by fall at the 2:56 mark of the second period.
Dalton Preston went 1-2 in the 140-pound class. Preston won his second match over Luke Hustead of Marceline by regular decision, 8-3. He lost his first match to Terry Hodge of Raytown South by fall at the 5:41 mark of the third period and his third match to Ryan Motley of Higginsville by fall at the 3:59 mark of the second period.
Colten McClure went 2-2 in the 145-pound class. He won his first match over Nick Niemeier of Marceline by regular decision, 10-9, and his fourth match over Johnny Bodi of Hancock by regular decision, 6-4. He lost his second match to Jeremy Bader of Boonville by fall at the 3:39 mark of the second period, and his third match to Jimmy Damron of Richmond by fall at the 1:00 mark in the first period.
Justin Brinser went 1-3 in the 189-pound class. He won his fourth match over Nick Jordan of Lawson by fall at the 3:58 mark in the second period. Brinser lost his first match to Corey Dosthrup of Raytown South by fall at the 2:13 mark of the second period; his second match to Erick Munoz of Marceline by fall at the 3:29 mark of the second period; and his third match to Wyatt Salsbury of Whitfield by fall at the 1:25 mark of the first period.
Bryan Johnson went 1-1 in the 285-pound class, rounding out the Trenton wrestlers. Johnson won his first match over Ian Jesse of Plattsburg by fall at the 0:40 mark of the first period, and lost his second match to Austin Magyar of Boonville by fall at the 2:20 mark of the second period.
“I was pleased with the effort our wrestlers put out,” Hill said. “We wrestled tough with tough kids, however, we still have lots of areas that need improvement. We will be working hard in practice to fix the mistakes that cost us points and matches.”
Trenton returns to the mat on Tuesday when the Bulldogs travel to Gallatin for action beginning at 6 p.m.
