Bulldogs
The Trenton boys controlled the game right from the get-go, pulling out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter.
“They (Trenton) did a good job of wearing us down early,” Gilman City Head Coach Brent Burke said. “They were really physical in the half court game and they took us out of our game.”
Gilman City regrouped and played with the Bulldogs throughout the second quarter, but Trenton still held a commanding 35-22 lead going into halftime.
Trenton went on another run in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 15-8. Up 50-30 going into the final quarter, the Bulldogs closed strong, sealing the win and claiming the consolation trophy.
“When we started the season we kind of wanted to take the shots on our own,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “Now we are making that extra pass and getting it to the guys who are open. We are playing more like a team now. The defense is looking a lot better too, so we are showing some big improvements from how we started the season.”
Kameron Alley was a big part of the Bulldogs’ win as he led the team with 12 points, nine of which came via the three-point shot. Kyle Hoyt was strong as usual, scoring 11 points in the post. Hoyt also pulled down 11 rebounds, giving him his third-straight double-double. Brett Lawson and Tyler Brinkley also hit double-figures, scoring 10 points each.
Bryant Elder led the way for Gilman City, scoring 14 points. Blake Johnson also had a good night, collecting nine rebounds for the Hawks.
As a team, Gilman continued to be very balanced with 11 different players scoring.
Trenton went to 2-1 on the season while Gilman fell to 1-2.
Gilman City’s next game will be on Tuesday, Dec. 11, when they travel to Gallatin for action.
Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs could not cash in on a trophy like the boys did as they fell to Newtown-Harris.
Trenton fell despite a spectacular performance by freshman Rebekah Capeder, who led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points and also pulled down a game-high 22 rebounds.
“Rebekah had a great tournament,” Head Coach Quentin Albrecht said. “She had 44 total points and 34 rebounds.”
Trenton opened the game, playing right with the Lady Tigers. After a quarter of play, Trenton trailed just 10-9. Newtown went on a run in the second quarter that proved to be the difference in the game. Newtown outscored the Lady Bulldogs 17-9, setting Trenton back. At the half, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 27-18.
“We struggled defensively in the second quarter,” Albrecht said. “That ended up costing us.”
Trenton battled back in the second half, outscoring Newtown 13-10 in the third period and 13-11 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs even had the lead briefly, but could not hold on as Newtown took home the consolation title with the win.
“We fought back in the second half,” Albrecht said. “We even took the lead, but we just came up a little short. We’re getting better.”
Behind Capeder’s 15-point performance was another freshman, Lindsey Derry, who had the team’s second-high point total with 13.
Trenton fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
Both the boys and girls squads will return to action tonight as they travel to Princeton for action beginning at 6 p.m.
