R-5 Girls Go To 1-1 In Mercer Tournament

The Grundy R-5 girls junior high basketball team is 1-1 in the Mercer Tournament following a win Monday against Ridgeway and a loss to the host team on Tuesday.

Grundy vs. Ridgeway
The Lady Panthers overwhelmed the Ridgeway Owls on Monday, taking a 34-6 victory. Grundy wasted no time putting distance between the two teams as they ended the first quarter with an 8-2 lead and went into half-time up 10-6. The second half was all Grundy as they scored 16 points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth while holding Ridgeway scoreless in the half.
Shelbi Stimpson and Vanessa Lentz each had 12 points for the Lady Panthers, with Stimpson pulling down eight rebounds while adding six assists and five steals. Mina Headrick also had five steals.
Grundy vs. Mercer
Grundy R-5 played with Mercer in the first half, trailing only 11-7 at the end of the first period and 15-11 at the half. R-5 couldn’t get anything going in the second half and was outscored 13-4 in the third quarter and 11-2 in the second to take the loss, 39-17.
Lentz led R-5 with nine points while Stimpson added eight. Mercer’s Sierra Michaelis led all scorers with 15 points.
The Lady Panthers are now 7-4 on the season and will return to Mercer on Friday to play for third place.
