The Grundy R-5 girls junior high basketball team won the consolation game of the Tri-County Tournament on Friday night in Jamesport. The R-5 junior high boys were in action on Monday during the opening round of the Mercer Junior High Tournament.

Girls
The girls faced off with Gilman City for the consolation trophy and came away with a 38-12 win.
The Grundy girls got a good start, playing solid defense. Grundy shut out the Lady Hawks in the first quarter and only allowed two points in the second. The defensive play of the Lady Panthers allowed them to take a 13-2 halftime lead.
“Outstanding team defense allowed us to gain momentum early in the game,” Grundy Head Coach Curtis May said.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers continued to play strong defense while scoring as well. The Lady Panthers outscored Gilman 11-3 and 14-7 in the final two quarters to pull away for a 38-12 win, and the consolation trophy.
Shelbi Stimpson led the way for the Lady Panthers, scoring a game-high 16 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Vanessa Lentz had another good game, scoring 11 points and pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Panthers moved to 6-3 on the season following the Tri-County Tournament.
Boys
The Grundy R-5 boys were in action Monday night for the opening round of the Mercer Tournament.
Mercer jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Cardinals outscored the Panthers by 10 points in both the second and third quarters before finishing the game off with a 10-4 run in the fourth quarter. When the game ended, Mercer had taken a 42-12 win.
“Turnovers hurt us,” Grundy Head Coach Les Jackson said.
Grundy was led by Brody Hatcher, Mitch Alley and Lucas Williams, all of whom scored four points. Williams had a team-high 11 rebounds. Mercer was led by Colton Hartley with 19 points.
