Three area junior high basketball teams were in action Thursday night. The Gilman City boys advanced to 3-0 and clinched a trip to the Winston Tournament championship game. The Newtown-Harris Tigers and Pleasant View Blue Jays were also in action, squaring off against one another at the Pleasant View school.

Gilman City
The Gilman City boys junior high basketball team clinched a trip to the Winston Tournament championship game with a 28-21 semifinal win over North Harrison on Thursday night.
Gilman City outscored the Shamrocks in the first and second quarters to gain a 17-13 advantage at the half.
North Harrison battled back, holding the Hawks to just two points in the third quarter. Gilman’s defense was strong as well, however, giving up just four points. As the teams headed for the final quarter of play, Gilman was clinging to a 19-17 lead.
The Hawks outscored the Shamrocks in the final quarter, 9-4, to pull away for a 28-21 win.
Mason Ward led a balanced scoring attack by the Hawks, scoring seven points. Ryan Burrows chipped in five of his own to help Gilman City seal the win. North Harrison was led by Aaron Thompson, who scored a game-high eight points.
The win moved the Hawks to 3-0 on the season. The win also clinched a trip to the Winston Tournament championship game. Gilman City will face off with Ridgeway for first place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Winston.
The Newtown-Harris Tigers and Pleasant View Blue Jays met at the R-6 School for junior high basketball action Thursday night.
Newtown vs. Pleasant View
Newtown was able to come away with a pair of wins, taking the girls game by a score of 29-14 and the boys game, 48-29.
In girls action, Newtown jumped out to an early lead and controlled the pace of the game all night. Mercedes Foster was a force for the Lady Tigers, putting up 14 points. Tara Collings also got in the act, scoring nine points.
Pleasant View was led by Tosha Wilson and Madison Trump, who each scored four points.
The story of the boys game was Trevor Tucker, who racked up 20 points to lead Newtown to victory. Tucker scored from all over the court in the Tigers’ 48-29 win. Tucker got a helping hand from Brandon Rosebrook, who also hit double-digits with 10 points.
Pleasant View got a strong performance from Alex Anderson, who led the team with 10 points. Jacob Meservey was second-high on the team with six points.
Both Pleasant View squads dropped to 2-1 on the season with the losses. The R-6 squads will be back in action on Monday when they take part in the Laredo Tournament. The Lady Blue Jays will take on the Laredo Lady Tigers at 7:20 p.m. and the boys will follow, also against Laredo at 8:30.
