The Red Ribbon Campaign presents a visible commitment to a safe, healthy and drug-free lifestyle. The campaign creates awareness of the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and supports the decision to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week was created to honor Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena of the Drug Enforcement Agency, who died fighting the war on drugs in 1985. Agent Camarena, then 37, uncovered a multibillion dollar drug ring in Mexico that was pushing a heavy supply of illicit drugs into the United States. Agent Camarena found evidence that linked drug activity to high-ranking Mexican officials from the Mexican Army, police forces and government. While working in Mexico to bring down the ring, Agent Camarena was kidnapped and killed in Feb. 1995. Red Ribbon Week celebrates the memory of a special man who died in striving to keep Americans safe from drugs. Over 80 million young people and adults wear the red ribbon and participate in prevention activities each year in support of Camarena’s efforts and to send the message to live drug free.
Rissler Elementary School
Rissler Elementary School will observe the week by wearing red ribbons along with daily dress themes to promote a lifestyle against drugs. The students are decorating Hy-Vee grocery sacks with anti-drug messages that will be recycled back into the community. Kal Kotter productions will be performing a magic show with a drug awareness theme for students and each class is getting the chance to enter a door contest with the theme “Slamming the Door on Drugs.” Students who participate by wearing their red ribbons and being involved in the dress up days will also have the chance to win prizes from the guidance department.
The daily themes and dress-up days include Monday, Oct. 22 – “Join the Fight Against Drugs.” Students should wear camouflage items.
Tuesday, Oct. 23 – “Wild About Being Drug-Fair,” with students coming to school with “wild” hair.
Wednesday, Oct. 24 – “Drugs Give You the Blues,” with students wearing jeans and blue clothing.
