The fifth and final honoree to be named to the Distinguished Class of Alumni from Trenton Junior College is a 1974 graduate of Meadville High School and a 1976 graduate of TJC.
Dr. Mark Foster St. Claire To Be Honored
Dr. Mark Foster St. Claire now resides in Bethesda, MD and enjoys traveling, history, genealogy and snow skiing and just recently became an avid bicyclist along with his 13-year old daughter.
All one has to do is look at this man’s resume and question how he finds time to enjoy any of these hobbies with more than a full-time career. Currently the Director of the Laboratory Animal Resources Section of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, Dr. Foster St. Claire is also facility veterinarian for the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. His additional responsibilities include supervision of the Institute’s laboratory animal care program which incorporates staff management, budgetary expertise, evaluating legislation affecting the use of animals in biomedical research, and facility management. He serves as the control substance program coordinator for the institute as well as the director of the laboratory animal program.
A graduate of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Dr. Foster St. Claire earned both his bachelor of science degree in dairy science and a master of science degree in nutrition from the Columbia university in 1978 and 1983 respectively. He was an honors scholar at the university and received the J.B. Arthur Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine. In addition, he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. He completed his residency in laboratory animal medicine in 1995 from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Foster St. Claire was one of several siblings of the second generation of the Foster family who attended TJC following in the footsteps of his mother – now a retired educator.
Dr. Foster St. Claire is a frequent presenter in lecture series as well as author of many, many articles on subjects ranging from laboratory animal medicine to parasites of laboratory animals. The TJC alum has served as a member of the faculty at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, IA and is both a veterinary medical officer and consultant in Maryland based institutes and laboratories.
He has received numerous awards and honors from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and holds memberships in several state and national organizations in his field of study. He is member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners and served as a state officer of the Mid-Missouri Branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
Dr. Foster St. Claire is an active member of the Montgomery County Christian Church and is the son of Mrs. Jean Foster of rural Humphreys and the late Allen Foster.
Dr. St. Claire joins Phillip Schlarb, Dr. Lester Skaggs, Dr. John Holcomb and Don and Letha Woodard as members of the 2007 Honor Class. Each will be recognized as a part of the program at next week’s NCMC Gala on Saturday, October 13th. Deadline for reservations is Friday in the Development Office of North Central Missouri College.
