The Trenton High School Lady Bulldogs volleyball team honored senior Sarah Marrs on Senior Night Tuesday in Trenton. The Lady Bulldogs lost their final home game of the year to Lathrop, 25-13, 25-9.
Volleyball Team Displays Good Hustle
Trenton dropped the first point of game one, but won four of the next five points to go up 4-2. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Lady Mules battled back to tie the game at four.
Lathrop had a good server and the Lady Bulldogs struggled to get possession. When Trenton did finally break serve, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 13-6.
Trenton made a slight rally down the stretch, but couldn’t get close enough as the Lady Bulldogs fell in game one, 25-13.
Trenton again jumped out to an early lead in game two. An ace by Emily Smith put Trenton up 4-2 in the early going. Trenton then faced the same server that gave them trouble in game one. This time was worse, however, as Lathrop went on a tear, reeling off 13 straight points, 12 of them service points.
When Trenton finally stopped the Lady Mules’ run, the team trailed 15-5. Trenton displayed several good hustle plays in the late stages of the match, but couldn’t get points to match its efforts.
“We really wanted it,” Head Coach Taya Ray said. “The girls are getting better at that. They are getting better at going after the ball and wanting it and leaving everything on the court.”
In the end, Trenton fell in game two, 25-9.
“We played better tonight,” Ray said. “We are still lacking focus. We play really good usually to start with and then our focus gets off. We start worrying about what we did wrong instead of what we need to do next.”
Coach Ray also talked about her lone senior from this year’s squad and what she has given the team.
“I’m really going to miss Sarah,” Ray said. “She’s a great senior who always works really hard and brings a good attitude and a great work ethic to the team. She always stays levelheaded on the court.”
Statistically, the Lady Bulldogs were led by Smith, who had four kills, two aces and one block. Brittaney Oxford had two aces and Kori Grogan had two blocks.
The JV was also in action and took a 25-13, 25-7 loss to Lathrop. The JV squad was led by Brittaney Tungland, who had two aces on the night.
The volleyball team will be back at it on Thursday when the team travels to Norborne for action beginning at 5 p.m.
