“This was our fourth 5-4 loss,” Coach Mike Bosley said. “We have found a different way to come up short each time.”
Elizabeth Hoffman ran across a very tough opponent in Kirksville’s Jean Ochs. Hoffman battled hard, but couldn’t record a point, losing 8-0.
Bobbie Lovell continued to be one of, if not, Trenton’s strongest player, recording yet another win. Lovell shut down Kirksville’s number two player, winning 8-3.
In the number three spot, Kimby Brown fell 8-4, and Kirksville got another point when Alyssa Dougan fell, 8-5. After the first wave of games, Trenton had dug itself a hole, trailing 3-1.
Lindsay Creason gave the Lady Bulldogs their biggest win of the match, ridiculing her opponent with her racket in an 8-1 win.
Mackenzie Hall fell in the final singles match in a close 8-6 contest. Heading into doubles, Kirksville led 4-2.
Kirksville sealed the win with a doubles victory over the tandem of Lovell and Hoffman at number one doubles.
Trenton didn’t give in, however, taking wins in the final two doubles matches. Brown and Dougan took an 8-2 win in what was a strong doubles showing. Creason became the Lady Bulldog’s only undefeated player on the day when she teamed up with Hall to take a 6-1 win over their opponents.
“I was pleased that we won two out of three doubles matches,” Bosley said. “There have been other nights we would have liked to have done that.”
The Trenton tennis squad’s record dropped to 9-7 following the loss. Trenton will look to get back on track, however, next Monday when they host LeBlond at the THS tennis courts in Trenton. It will be the final home matchup for the Lady Bulldogs before districts.
The junior varsity was also in action against Kirksville, where they fell 8-4.
The JV got wins in singles action from Falisha Anderson, who won 6-3, and Mercedes Barron, who won 6-4.
In doubles play, the teams of Michelle Gay and Bailey Eaton and Paige DeVorss and Ashley Gross took wins for Trenton. Gay and Eaton won 6-0, while DeVorss and Gross won 6-2.
Others in losing efforts for the JV included Lindsey Dustman, Callie Bacon and Savannah Hanson, who all played singles matches.
Doubles teams in action included the teams of Anderson and Chelsi Miller, Shelby Muff and DeVorss, Lauren Gray and Kayna Tolle, Amber Fischbach and Kristen Geib and the team of Bacon and Barron.
The JV squad will also be in action next Monday against LeBlond’s JV team. Action for the JV will follow the varsity games.
