According to information provided by Principal/Superintendent Lyle Best, the board learned that the district met AYP in the areas of communication arts, mathematics and attendance, which are the areas for K-8 school districts. The AYP also compared 2006 and 2007 data, as well as a comparison of MAP scores from 2006 and 2007.
Board members approved the Professional Development Plan for the 2007-2008 school year. The plan, which was developed by Best and the faculty, identifies the Professional Development Committee’s objectives, policies and goals for the faculty and staff.
Best presented information the district has received from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the district’s environmental plans concerning asbestos. The board discussed options for updating its plan and Best presented information on how local education agencies can gain compliance with these environmental policies. The board voted to take appropriate action to regain compliance and agreed to contact Kenneth Goodwin to formulate the plan and conduct an inspection.
Best presented information on the need to purchase a storage building in which to house certain maintenance items and was directed to continue gathering estimates.
In other business, the board adopted policies from Missouri Consultants for Education, agreed to get the best interest rate available for a current 12-month certificate of deposit and agreed to purchase electrical wiring and conduit in order to provide air conditioning in two classrooms and the kitchen. The board also voted to purchase an air conditioner that is at least 18,000 BTU and approved a motion to dispose of any excess food.
In his report, Best reviewed the Spickard Fall Festival activities, as well as discussing a grant from the GEC Foundation, the August attendance rate, parent-teacher conferences (Sept. 19-20), a field trip to a pumpkin patch on Oct. 4 and an MSIP update. He also said the junior high basketball schedule will include three home games, two away games and two tournaments.
An executive session was held, with no announcement made.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 15.
