Trenton fell in their first pool play game on Saturday, but battled back to win their second contest. Several teams were tied with a 1-1 record, but Trenton got the nod into the championship game because they had given up the fewest runs in pool play action.
In the title game, Trenton won 4-0 over Lawson to clinch the White Division title in dominating fashion.
Game One
Trenton got off to a slow start in the tournament, losing game one 2-1 to Bevier.
Trenton struggled offensively and could only muster one run, which was scored by Tasha Hutchinson.
Sophomore pitcher Aubrey Utley pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits. Utley only walked two and struck out 13 Bevier batters in the contest.
Game Two
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Bulldogs rebounded nicely in game two, defeating Odessa 4-2.
Utley again struck out double digits as she fanned 10. She only allowed one earned run on 8 hits.
Offensively, Trenton got a much better performance than in game one. Crystal Pash drove in two runs on one hit and Aimee Gutshall and Kylie Russell also had an RBI each. Scoring runs for Trenton in the contest were Emily Anderson, who crossed the plate twice, as well as JaNea Whitney and Lindsey Derry.
Championship Game
In the championship game, Trenton pulled out all the stops for an impressive 4-0 win over Lawson.
On the hill, Utley shut out the Lady Cardinal lineup, allowing no runs on just three hits. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out a tournament-high 14 Lady Cardinals.
Whitney was 2-for-3 at the plate and stole two bases for the Lady Bulldogs. Whitney also scored one of Trenton’s runs.
Others who contributed at the plate were Derry, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored; Anderson, who was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored; Russell, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI; Pash, who was 1-for-1 with an RBI; Ewing, who was 1-for-3 with a run scored; and Samantha Fair, who stole a base.
It was the first time in the tournament’s five-year history that the Lady Bulldogs have taken the top spot.
Trenton improved to 12-2 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will look to improve their record again tonight at Griffin Field in Trenton when they host Putnam County. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 5 o’clock. v
