R-5 Teams Compete In HDC Tournament
Grundy R-5 Girls
The R-5 girls opened the tournament with a 9-8 win over Cainsvillle on the strength of Vanessa Lentz’s pitching. Lentz went five innings, striking out 10 batters and not giving up a single walk. R-5 fell behind in the first inning, 3-1, and entered last inning down 6-3 before scoring six runs in the final inning and holding Cainsville to only two more runs.
Lentz went two-for-three at the plate, knocking in three RBIs, while Mina Headrick had two singles in the game.
“Vanessa pitched very well,” said Coach Curtis May. “And our defense made plays when we had to have them.”
Although they showed improvement over an earlier contest against North Harrison, the R-5 girls dropped a game to the Lady Shamrocks, the eventual tournament champions, 10-0. Lentz took the loss for R-5, striking out two batters in five innings.
The third game did not go well for R-5 either, as the Lady Panthers fell to Pattonsburg, 15-5 in six innings. Lentz again took the loss, striking out eight batters. Lentz, Taylor Turner and Heather Vivone each had one hit.
The Lady Panthers, who are now 1- 5 on the season, will face the Pattonsburg Panthers at Galt on Tuesday.
Grundy R-5 Boys
The R-5 offense showed up late in the game when the Panthers took a 10-7 loss to Winston in the opening-round game Friday evening.
R-5 could only manage 1 run in the first five innings, while giving up seven runs to Winston. The Panthers then scored six runs in the last two innings, but also gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to drop the contest. Bryce Rains took the loss for the Panthers.
Cody Brown was two-for-four, with a triple and two RBIs and Adam Buckner was one-for-three, with one RBI.
The R-5 boys are now 2-3 on the season and will be in action Tuesday against Pattonsburg at Galt, following the girls game.
