Trenton got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs. Kylie Russell gave the Lady Bulldogs a runner with a leadoff single. Aimee Gutshall came to the plate. Down in the count 0-2, Gutshall delivered with a double to drive in Russell. Trenton added another run in the inning when Tasha Ewing drove in Gutshall.
Brookfield answered in the top of the third inning with a run of its own, cutting Trenton’s lead in half.
Trenton’s offense went into another slump, struggling to score runs. Brookfield tied the game in the top of the fifth and the contest would remain tied into the seventh.
Trenton shut down Brookfield in the top of the seventh inning behind the arm of pitcher Aubrey Utley.
In the bottom of the seventh, Trenton got a runner to work with when Crystal Pash reached base. With two outs, Samantha Fair came to the plate. Fair delivered, hitting a shot to score Pash from third and win the ballgame for the Lady Bulldogs.
Utley was strong on the hill for the Lady Bulldogs, pitching all seven innings. She fanned five and only allowed one earned run on just three hits.
“Our bats have been flat,” Head Coach Steve Richman said. “Even though we had eight hits, we’re still not driving the ball. It’s hard to score runs when you just sprinkle hits here and there.”
The junior varsity was also in action. Like the varsity, the JV came away with a win, beating Brookfield by a final of 9-2.
Taylor Lynch had a good game at the plate, hitting a double and a triple. Lynch also drove in three runs with her hits.
Rebekah Capeder and Tasha Hutchinson combined for the pitching duties and held the Brookfield offense in check, only allowing two runs on the night.
The softball squad, now 6-1 this season, will be back in action on the road next Monday when the Lady Bulldogs play against North Platte and Plattsburg in a doubleheader.
