On a 6-0 vote, the council agreed to hire Burge during a special meeting on Monday night. City Administrator Kerry Sampson said that Jim Bush and Chuck Elliott were absent from the meeting, however, both had earlier indicated their support on hiring Burge.
Burge was economic developer for the city of Trenton from May 2005 to September 2006, when he became executive director of the Nodaway Economic Development, Inc. at Maryville. In the past several months, he has been engaged in private business in Fulton.
Sampson said Burge was a natural fit for the position, noting his past experience with the city and the success he had in economic development efforts while in Trenton. Sampson noted that while final figures have not yet been received, it has been estimated the city of Trenton had over $1 million in economic development activity during 2006, including both business and recreation as well as housing construction.
“He can come in and hit the ground running,” Sampson said.
Burge will be paid $41,600, which Sampson said was the same salary he was receiving when he left Trenton. An exact starting date has yet to be determine, however, Sampson noted that Burge will be working with city officials on some projects now under way, including grant applications due in early July as well as the fly-in at the airport on July 4.
