Gooseberry Festival Comes To A Close

The third annual Gooseberry Festival was held over the weekend in Trenton, with a number of activities held throughout the community.

Felisha Bertrand of Princeton was named the Gooseberry Queen during a pageant held on Saturday morning at the Boji Stone Coffee Shop and Book Store and the Rock Barn. CeJae May of Trenton was selected as the Gooseberry Princess.
Also held on Saturday morning at the Rock Barn was the gooseberry cooking contest. Winners included:
Gooseberry Pie – 1. Dockery Chapel Church, 2. Cindy Mathern, 3. Dorothy Taul.
Gooseberry Bread – 1. Cindy Mathern, 2. Dorothy Taul.
Gooseberry Muffins – 1. Dorothy Taul.
Gooseberry Ice Cream – 1. NiChea McHargue.
Gooseberry Jam – 1. Carrol Key, 2. Michelle Johnson.
The 5K/10K run/walk was held on Saturday morning at Eastside Park. The overall 5K winner was Dustin Koon of Spickard, who ran a time of 23.10. John Ray of Trenton was the 10K winner with a time of 47.18. Winners by age group included:
Men 5K Run
19-and-under – 1. Dustin Koon.
20-29 – 1. Ian Wright of Salt Lake City, UT, 23.35.
40-49 – 1. Richard Cotton of Trenton, 24.22.
50-and-Over – 1. Tad Trombley of Trenton, 24.04; 2. Jim Gibson of Trenton, 27.12; and 3. Wendell Lenhart of Trenton, 32.25.
Women 10K Run
19-and-Under – 1. Amber Fischbach of Trenton, 54.29.
20-29 – 1. Laura Booth of Milan, 66.10.
30-39 – 1. Terria Cox of Chillicothe, 47.46; and 2. Jill Watkins of Chillicothe, 48.26.
40-49 – 1. Leah Brinser of Trenton, 59.31; and 2. Jane Cotton of Trenton, 72.59.
Men 10K Run
19-and-Under – 1. John Ray.
20-29 – 1. Larry Smith of Trenton, 49.06.
30-39 – 1. Jeb Walker of Trenton, 60.06.
Women 5K Walk
50-And-Over – 1. Sandy Hanbach of Pueblo, CA; and 2. Carmen Coon of Spickard.
Women 10K Walk
1. Cherie McHargue of Trenton.
Pee Wee Tournament
The Trenton Pee Wee Boys won the Pee Wee Boys Tournament on Sunday afternoon, defeating Unionville in the finals, 18-12. Taking third place was Mercer.
Scores from the tournament on Saturday included Mercer 16, Galt 2; Trenton 15, Green City 3; Green City 17, Galt 4; Trenton 22, Unionville 15; Unionville 25, Princeton (Howden) 5; Galt 6, Princeton (Howden) 4; Unionville 23, Mercer 8; Mercer 8, Princeton (Bagley) 3; Mercer 17, Green City 14; Unionville 20, Mercer 17 (third-place game).
Barbecue Contest
A total of 17 teams participated in the festival’s inaugural barbecue contest, with 12 teams competing in all four categories, which includes chicken, pork ribs, pork and beef brisket. Reservoir Hogs of Lenexa, KS, was the overall winner and will now represent Trenton at the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City. Motley Que Crew of rural Trenton was named the reserve champion.
Winners in the separate categories were All Sizes BBQ of Gladstone, chicken; Baker’s Smokehouse Catering Co. of Novinger, pork ribs; All American BBQ of Easton, pork; and Reservoir Hogs, brisket.
Horseshoe Pitching
There were six participants in the horseshoe pitching contest on Saturday. Winners included:
Class A – 1. Mark Clark of Spickard and 2. John Egeland of Trenton.
Class B – 1. Junior Hamilton of Tindall and 2. Glen Briggs of Trenton.
Team Roping
A team roping event was held on Saturday night at the North Central Missouri Saddle Club Grounds with 27 participants.
In the round-robin series, first place went to David Maxwell and Jared Lamma while second was won by Randy Claycomb and Dale Gray. Jesse Bird and Mac Scott were third. The team with the fasatest time was Katie Black and Kevin Lair.
In the jackpot roping, Johnny Tredway and Joe Bird teamed up to take first place. Second place went to Gary Nible and Terry Wynne. El Nopal Restaurant served as the sponsor.
