The Grundy County Rural Fire Protection District spent over two hours extinguishing and keeping watch over a fire in a field located south of Trenton on Wednesday.
According to firefighters, the blaze was reported by a passerby on Highway 65 South, between the May Corner and Foster Corner. David Meservey, who owns the land, had started a controlled burn of corn stalks and other leftover debris from flooding. About two acres of land burned on both the south and north sides of the roadway and, at the owners request and due to a traffic hazard on Highway 65, firemen extinguished the fire. They remained on the scene from about 10:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m.
