The Newtown-Harris Board of Education hired a teacher and heard information about several end-of-the-year activities during a meeting on Monday night.

According to information provided by Superintendent Andy Anderson, Jerry Kiger was hired as social studies teacher for the 2007-2008 school year. He will teach in grades seven through 12.
The board approved a list of nine seniors for graduation and 10 eighth graders for promotion to the high school. High school and eighth grade graduation ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the school.
The board approved the senior trip to be held on May 13-17. Students will be going to St. Louis and Osage Beach. Approval was given to summer workers and projects.
Summer school will be held on Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The FFA banquet will be held this evening at 6 o’clock while kindergarten round-up is Wednesday. The athletic banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22 and the National Honor Society induction ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23. The academic awards assembly will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, with classes being dismissed for the summer at 11:30 a.m.
Recognition was given to third grader Allison Gibson, who was selected as the elementary student of the month. The boys and girls track teams and coaches Jeremy Parsons and Tim Cool were recognized for their efforts at the district track meet. It was noted that 13 of 18 athletes qualified for the sectional meet on May 12 in Marshall.
A meeting is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 with representatives of MARCIT to discuss insurance.
