Jean Gann Brookshier, an 82-year-old resident of Chillicothe, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at the Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2007 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Chillicothe. Burial will be at the Mt. Olive Cemetery at Chillicothe.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Heritage Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Mrs. Brookshier was born on Feb. 9, 1925 in Kansas City, the daughter of Grover and Mabel Hoerath Gann. She spent her youth traveling between Kansas City and the Sampsel Township area of Livingston County. She attended public schools in Kansas City and the Raulie School in rural Livingston County. She graduated at the age of 16 from East High School in Kansas City.
She was employed at the North Missouri Lumber Co. and Boss Manufacturing Co. prior to her marriage. She was married on Jan. 14, 1956 at the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in rural Livingston County to Russell Dean Brookshier, who preceded her in death on March 3, 1997. After their marriage, the couple purchased a farm near Helena, where they resided for six years. They moved to southeastern Livingston County near Hale in 1963, where they operated a Grade A dairy and later a beef cattle operation for many years. She lived there until 2000, when she moved to Chillicothe. She had been a resident of Morningside Center Nursing Home since October 2005. She had also been employed for over 23 years at Midwest Glove Factory and Lambert Glove Factory, both in Chillicothe.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Chillicothe, was a founder of the Livingston County Genealogy Society, was a founder and member of the Gann Historical Society and Library, was a founder and member of the Abandoned Cemetery Association, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, was a life member of the Grand River Historical Society, was a member of the Olive Prindle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a member of Welcoming Hands, was a member of the Sho-Me Chilli Red Hatters, was a member of the Livingston County Republican Women’s Club and a member of the Livingston County Republican Committee. She was an RSVP volunteer, a partner in education with the Hale R-1 School District Library, was a member of the Mt. Olive Cemetery Association and was a former member of the Avalon Rebekah Lodge. She served as an officer and in various leadership positions with each organization.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Dupree and her husband, Keith, of St. Joseph, Martha Brookshier of St. Joseph and Donna Marriott of Chillicothe; two sons, David Brookshier and his wife, Lisa, of Cameron, and Dean Brookshier and his wife, Nonie, of Chillicothe; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson due in July.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Juanita Dryden and Marie Dryden.
