North Central Missouri College President Dr. Neil Nuttall said Gov. Blunt discussed the need for colleges to take a strong look at their emergency plans in dealing with situations such as those that occurred on Monday at Virginia Tech. He said he plans to form a task force, chaired by Mark James of the Public Safety Department and the acting director of the Coordinating Board of Higher Education. Representatives from two- and four-year schools will be included in the task force, Dr. Nuttall said, as well as others from throughout the state. Blunt was expected to outline the duties of the task force during a press conference slated for Tuesday afternoon.
Dr. Nuttall noted that while the NCMC emergency plan addresses concerns involving weather and bomb threats, incidents such as the shooting on Monday are not included. He said he will be meeting with campus personnel to take a look at the NCMC plan in an attempt to update the document. He said that Gov. Blunt has suggested colleges follow the state’s emergency guide that is published on the state website and is being used by many school district and other entities throughout the state.
