Board members were given the oath of office and personnel issues were discussed during meetings Thursday evening of three area boards of education.
R-5, Laredo and Newtown-Harris Boards Meet
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Board of Education gave the oath of office to newly-elected members, discussed summer school and accepted a resignation during its meeting.
Superintendent Rob Deaver said the board certified election results and new board members were administered the oath of office. Randy Radcliff, a new member, and Melody Shipley, an incumbent, were each elected to three year terms. Board officers were elected and include Damon Neff, president; Eric Gann, vice-president; Melody Shipley, secretary; and Kelli Alley, treasurer.
Elementary Principal Lisa Fairley reported on attendance and on the recent parent-teacher conferences and reminded the board that eighth grade graduation will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 10 at the elementary gym in Humphreys. High School Principal Randy Huffman also reported on attendance and recognized several students for their recent accomplishments. He announced that the National Honor Society induction will be held at 6 p.m. April 30 at the high school in Galt and that the FFA Banquet will be held on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. During his report, the board approved various curriculum in the areas of math and social studies.
The board approved summer school plans, with summer school beginning on May 18 and ending June 6 at the elementary school and June 1 at the high school. No summer school will be held on Memorial Day. The Kindergarten Readiness Camp will run from May 22 to June 1.
In other business, the board approved the district technology plan and participation in a health insurance cooperative with other Northwest Missouri schools. The resignation of Guidance Counselor Lisa Dicken was also approved, as she is moving out of state. Board members approved amendments to the budget and discussed building and maintenance issues, with no decisions made.
A closed session was held to discuss non-certified staff evaluations and all non-certified staff were re-hired for the 2007-2008 school year. Extra-duty assignments were also approved for the 2007-2008 school year.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for May 14.
Laredo R-7
Information provided by Administrator Jean Dustman indicated that the R-7 board gave the oath of office to newly-elected board members Mona Loyd, Phil Fox and David Lowrey and elected Brad Tolson as president, Matt Foster as vice president and Mrs. Loyd as treasurer.
Board members voted to reinstate career ladder with all three steps and to hold summer school this year. A mowing bid from Brewer and Ireland was accepted for the 2007 mowing season.
A representative of Blue Cross/Blue Shield presented information on health insurance, with no action taken. Board members also reviewed and approved the At Risk, ESO/ESL, Title Programs, Homeless and Migrant programs, as well as a facility report. Field trips were approved, including the third through seventh grade trip to St. Joseph on May 11; a kindergarten through second grade trip to a dairy farm in Osborn; and a Dairy Queen incentive trip for MAP testing. It was also announced that all buses have passed inspection.
Following an executive session, the board voted to set the adminstrator’s salary at $56,000 for the 2007-2008 school year and to re-hire all non-certified employees with a 7 percent salary increase. The cook’s salary was raised to compensate for extra duties and additional hours. Board members voted to offer contracts for two classroom aide positions and two classroom teaching positions for the 2007-2008 school year. The names of those persons have not been released. The board also accepted a letter of resignation from Vilma Holt as sixth and seventh grade instructor.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 14.
Newtown-Harris
Superintendent Andy Anderson said the board presented a certificate of appreciation and thanks to Tim Tucker for his nine years of service on the board. Danny Busick and Marty Altiser were given the oath of office and board members elected Jack Wells president, John Mino as vice president and Misti Coin as secretary.
Teacher reports were given by Linda Tucker and Ruth Bru and the board recognized Adam Crawford as the April Elementary Student of the Month. It was agreed to send seven students to the North Central Vocational-Technical School at Bethany next fall and to join the Northwest Missouri School Cooperative.
In personnel issues, the board accepted the resignations of Beth Foster, science teacher for grades seven through 12, and John Bruce, social studies instructor for grades seven through 12. Kelsi Fairley, a graduate of Missouri Western State University, was hired to fill the science position. All non-certified staff members were given a 3 percent increase in salary and all were offered jobs for the 2007-2008 school year.
In other business, the board approved summer school, which will be held May 30-June 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and approved the curriculum for English I and II, algebra I, communication arts, kindergarten, third and fourth grade communication arts, first and second grade math and fifth and sixth grade math.
It was announced that classes will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 30 to allow faculty and staff to attend CRP training from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Two make-up days were scheduled for May 22 and 23, with classes dismissed for the year at 11:30 a.m. May 23.
The next regular meeting is set for May 9.
