The woman received notification that she had won over $40,000 in a sweepstakes and received a check for $2,350. She was told to deposit the check and send part of the money back to the sweepstakes as a processing fee. She would then supposedly receive her $44,650 check. What happens in this type of scam is that the check is not honored at the bank due to the fact that it is a non-existent account or because the sweepstakes company has stopped payment. The person will have already sent funds to the sweepstakes before finding out this information.
Trenton Police Chief Bob Lewis is once again reminding residents who receive such solicitations to not send any money or provide any personal or account information.
