“We are beginning to do some things really well right now. Our plate discipline is improving and our defense is pretty much where it should be, but our pitching still needs to get better,” Head Coach Max Mothersbaugh said. “We have to compete more out there in the (pitching) circle. Our young arms have to catch up with the rest of the team.”
Pitcher Loren Stark picked up the win in the first game. She went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits. She also struck out five batters.
Offensively, the Lady Pirates got on top of Southwestern in the first inning and then just kept adding runs. Kallie Walczak and Erica Carr both went 4-for-4. Walczak had two RBIs and Carr scored three runs and drove in three runs.
Kristina Ramsey had a pair of hits, including a home run and four RBIs. Ramsey also scored two runs.
In the second game, walks really got NCMC into trouble. The Lady Pirates trailed heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, 5-1. At that point, NCMC got the bats going. The Lady Pirates scored five runs, including two runs on an Amber Corkins home run.
“Amber’s homer either tied the game or put us up by one run,” Mothersbaugh said. “Walks just killed us. We cannot continue to give teams free bases.”
Walczak was the winning pitcher. She went five and two-thirds innings before Carr came in and picked up the save. The Lady Pirates added a insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, which put them up, 7-5.
“We allowed them to make it interesting in the top of the seventh,” Mothersbaugh said.
Ramsey had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Walczak helped her own cause with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
The Lady Pirates play host to Marshalltown Community College on Thursday.
