The Spickard R-2 Board of Education accepted the resignation of its principal, while the Grundy R-5 and Newtown-Harris boards set salaries for the 2007-2008 school year during meetings held Monday evening.
Spickard Principal Resigns As Area Boards Meet
Spickard R-2
The Spickard School District will be seeking a new principal after the current principal resigned during Monday night’s special board meeting.
According to information provided by Principal Danny Johnson, he submitted his resignation, which was accepted 4-0, with board members Meleah Lawrence and Lindsay Glenn absent. Johnson said he has resigned so he can pursue a position that provides full health care benefits.
In other business, the board opened bids for the district’s building repair project that has forced classes to be moved to modular classrooms. Trickel Construction submitted a bid of $22,360, while Renner Construc-tion Management of Princeton submitted a bid of $17,500. Allen Russell Construction of Turney submitted a bid of $56,000. Both Lud Renner of Renner Construc-tion Management and Allen Russell were present at the meeting to answer questions. Johne Chapman of Trickel Construction was unable to attend due to a prior commitment to another project. After discussion, the board voted 3-0 to hire Renner Construction Management. Under the terms of the bid, the district will also hire a licensed structural engineer to oversee the project to ensure that the structure meets appropriate building codes. Those voting in favor of accepting the bid were Bob Munday, Dixon Munday and Bob Darby. Mike Jaycox abstained, noting that he was not sure he was ready to vote to accept the bid at this point. Board President J.R. Roberts only votes in the case of a tie.
The board’s next regular meeting is March 19.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Board of Education approved its salary schedule and set makeup days during a special meeting held Monday evening.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board approved the base salary for a beginning teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no experience at $24,000. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education mandates that the base salary must be $23,000 for the 2007-2008 school year. The current base for this school year is $23,405. The salary for a teacher with a master’s degree and 10 years of approved teaching experience will earn $31,000 as mandated by the state education department. The current salary for a teacher with that education and experience is $30,230. Teachers will be allowed to move on the salary schedule according to experience and education.
In addition, the board approved a 3 percent raise for non-certified staff members, as well as for administrators.
Board members approved the 2007-2008 school calendar, which shows the first day of school as Thursday, Aug. 16 and the last day of school scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2008. The board also approved two makeup days for this school year missed due to inclement weather. Classes will now be held on Wednesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 17.
In other business, the board approved the Gifted Program evaluation, curriculum for a variety of courses, the district’s procedural evaluation plan and the district’s Comprehensive Health Plan. A discussion was held concerning membership in the Northwest Missouri Schools Health Insurance Co-Op, with no decision made as to whether or not to join the group. More information will be sought on plan design and rates. The board did agreed to provide employees with a health fair at a cost of $20 per employee. The health fair will be held on March 26 at the high school in Galt and on March 30 at the elementary school in Humphreys.
The board approved a policy update on the handling of hazardous materials, including procedures for the safe handling and disposal of elemental mercury and mercury-containing items. Also approved was continued participation in the Special Education Co-Op during the 2007-2008 school year. Other Co-Op members include the Osborn, Breckenridge, Mirable, Cowgill and Kingston school districts.
In final action, the board approved an increase in mileage reimbursement beginning July 1. The reimbursement will be raised from 30 cents per mile to 38 cents per mile.
Several upcoming activities were discussed, including parent-teacher conferences, which are scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 15. No classes will be held on Friday, March 16.
A closed session was held to discuss personnel and student issues, with no announcements made.
The next regular board meeting has been moved from Monday, March 12 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 19 at the high school in Galt.
Newtown-Harris
Board members of the Newtown-Harris School District approved salary increases and hired teachers during their meeting on Monday.
According to information provided by Superintendent Andy Anderson, the board set the base salary at $23,000 and teachers in the district will receive an average salary increase of 4.3 percent. All teachers were offered contracts for the 2007-2008 school year.
In other business, the board heard teacher reports from Darlene Ewing and Patty Stark and approved regulations concerning mercury disposal. Eric Crawford, a sixth grader, was recognized as elementary student of the month and the board recognized Beth Foster and the junior high academic team, which ended the year with a record of 10-1 and was named the HDC Junior High Champions. The team also placed second in the HDC Tournament.
It was announced that school bus inspections will be conducted at 1 p.m. March 20 in Princeton and that government students will travel to Jefferson City on March 14 thanks to an MC5 grant. The Spring HDC Conference meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 21 at North Mercer and MAP testing is scheduled for March 26-30.
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for March 22, with an early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. and conferences scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. The boys and girls basketball teams and coaches were recognized for their seasons, with the girls taking second place at the district tournament and second place in the HDC Conference and the boys being named district champions. They will now play Stewartsville tonight at 6 o’clock at the Chillicothe Fieldhouse. The boys’ record is 25-2.
Anderson also announced that the district will be honored at the Distinction in Performance Banquet, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 4 at Truman State University.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10.
