“Poor shooting and bad transition defense in the first half really put us in a hole we could not climb out of,” Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said.
The Lady Bulldogs narrowed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Maryville, 17-11. That left Trenton down by seven points heading into the fourth quarter.
“I’m proud of the way we battled back in the second half. It show the character of this team, especially the seniors,” Ockenfels said.
Trenton outscored by Maryville in the fourth quarter, but by only two points.
Maryville went into the game with the idea of limiting the touches by Trenton’s standout forward Kari Shiflett. The plan worked as the Lady Spoofhounds held Shiflett to under 10 points. She finished the game with seven points.
Brittany Lynch scored 12 points, Trisha Ireland had 11 points and Aimee Gutshall chipped in with 10 points. The loss means THS finishes the season with a 12-12 overall record.
“It was an up and down season to say the least. We had our share of adversity and played through it,” Ockenfels said. “It is not the way we wanted to end the season, but the final game is always frustrating when you lose. Time will heal these wounds and the next group of Lady Bulldogs can look forward to keeping the program strong.”
