The council approved the execution of an agreement with Snyder and Associates, Inc., of Ankeny, IA for consultant services in conjunction with improvements at the airport. The company will prepare plans for improvements at the airport which will include sealing and resurfacing of the runway as well as grading and drainage improvements and removal of brush and obstructions.
Once the company has prepared the plans, the maintenance project will be let out for bids with the work scheduled to be completed as soon as possible. The company is to be paid just over $37,000 for the work which is the first year of a five-year plan for improvements at the airport.
City Administrator Kerry Sampson said funds for the work come from an aviation gas tax in Missouri administered by the federal government. The first year of the plan is a 90/10 share with the city required to provide 10 percent of the cost. The remaining four years of the plan are on a 95/5 share basis. Sampson said the city expects to receive nearly $600,000 for improvements at the airport.
The vote was unanimous among the six councilmembers present, Chuck Elliott and Jackie Soptic were absent.
Sampson said 108 persons would be in Trenton during early July as part of the World Changers project. Approximately 20 houses have been identified for work and he said that number of persons could complete work on ten to twelve homes. A construction coordinator from the organization is to be in Trenton soon to help decide which homes will be worked on this summer.
Sampson also noted representative from the international codes organization would be in Trenton to begin the process of updating the city’s building codes. Letters have been sent to local contractors about the meeting which will be on March 8 at city hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and all interested persons are encouraged to attend.
Street Supervisor Larry Griffin said the street department spent $6,543 in labor and materials for work associated with snow removal during eight incidences recently. He said street sweeping would begin in mid-March, weather permitting.
Councilman Ed Holt passed along several compliments to Griffin about the good work of street crews he had heard from residents.
The council also met in executive session following the meeting with no announcement being made.
Building and Nuisance Board
The Building and Nuisance Board met prior to the city council meeting and approved sending letters to two property owners on seven different parcels in the community.
The letters will notify the property owners they have 30 days to begin cleaning up the properties or to contact Building Inspector Gary Beverlin with a plan for cleaning up the properties.
The letters will be sent to Ron Peterie for properties he owns at 1002 Tindall, 1608 Carnes, 1715 Carnes, 1813 Merrill and 207 E. 10th. St., and to Max King for properties at 1414 Lulu and 413 W. 13th St.
Beverlin noted 30 structures have been submitted by their owners for demolition under a Community Development Block Grant proposal to be submitted by the city before April 1. Under the program the owner pays a portion of the cost of the demolition with the remaining cost covered by the grant. The grant is competitive and the city will have to see if it is approved for the program and for how much money. Persons interested in participated in the program are encouraged to contact city hall.
