HDC Tournament In Jamesport

Action got under way Saturday at the 2007 HDC Tournament, being played this year at Tri-County at Jamesport.
Eight games were played on the first day, with the Tri-County boys and girls, Mercer boys and girls, North Harrison and Cainsville girls and Ridgeway and Pattonsburg boys coming away with first-round wins.

Tri-County Boys
vs. Grundy R-5
A big offensive output in the second and third quarters by the Tri-County boys gave the Mustangs a 57-54 win over Grundy R-5.
The Panthers were 11-5 first quarter leaders before the Mustangs went on an 18-11 tear in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 23-22 lead. Tri-County outscored Grundy R-5 in the third quarter, 12-8, to lead by five points heading into the final period of play.
“We were hesitant on the offensive end the first three quarters and were beaten at the free throw line,” Grundy R-5 Coach Les Jackson said.
The Panthers hit just 6-of-11 at the charity stripe while Tri-County was 15-for-15.
“We played great team defense,” Tri-County Coach Terry McCollum said. “Trevor (Ward) did a great job on (Kyle) Larson and he got help from others staying on their man. We hit free throws late to hold off their run.”
Colby Searcy led the R-5 offense with 17 points while Logan Jackson and Larson scored 14 points each. Jackson also had 16 rebounds, five assists and three steals and Larson had 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tyler Jackson collected seven points, four assists and three steals.
Tri-County was led by Lance Huston with 17 points. Ward put in 16 points and Bruce Sweet added 10 points.
The R-5 boys are 11-7 and will play North Harrison at 9 p.m. on Tuesday in a loser’s bracket game.
The Mustangs are 11-8 and will take on Mercer on Wednesday in the tournament semifinals at 9 p.m.

Tri-County Girls
vs. Pattonsburg
The Tri-County girls got the better end of a low scoring affair with Pattonsburg, winning, 33-24.
The Lady Mustangs fell behind in the first quarter, 10-8, but used good defense to hold the Pattonsburg girls to just two points and take an 18-12 lead at intermission. Tri-County continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Lady Panthers in the final two periods, 15-12, to get the win.
Bailey Huston scored 16 points to lead the Lady Mustangs while Taryn Dustman scored eight.
Pattonsburg was led by Alean Speery and Tiffany deJong, each with nine points.
The Lady Mustangs move into the semifinals of the tournament on Wednesday night, taking on tonight’s winner of the Newtown-Harris-Cainsville game at 4 p.m. Pattonsburg will play the loser of that game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mercer Boys
vs. North Harrison
The Mercer boys showed their offensive prowess on Saturday as they rolled over North Harrison, 74-44.
The Cardinals took control early, outscoring the Shamrocks in the first quarter, 23-13. It was all Mercer from their as the Cardinals led at the half, 40-21, and after three quarters, 60-34.
Austin Hague led Mercer with 23 points while Heath West added 16 points. Tim Baumgardner scored 13 points.
North Harrison was led by Wyatt Gibson and Wayne Parmenter with 11 points each.
Mercer moves on to play Tri-County at 9 p.m. on Wednesday while North Harrison takes on Grundy R-5 at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mercer Girls
vs. Winston
The Mercer had three players in double figures as they downed Winston, 50-35.
Mercer took control early with an 11-5 first quarter lead and continued to dominate. The Lady Cardinals led at the half, 22-14, and after three quarters, 37-20.
Sarah Hernandez led the Mercer attack with 14 points while Toni Brundage added 13 points. Jessica Coon put in 11 points.
Winston’s leading scorer was Sarah Baker with 12 points.
The Mercer girls will take on the winner of tonight’s Gilman City-North Harrison game at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Winston is scheduled to meet the loser of that game at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Grundy R-5 Girls
vs. North Harrison
The Grundy R-5 girls found themselves on the short end of a 43-29 loss to North Harrison.
The Lady Shamrocks got the early lead, 10-6, and were up at the half, 24-10.
Morgan Hallock led North Harrison with 23 points.
Heather Vivone had 15 points for Grundy R-5 while Paige Ryals put in 10 points. North Harrison will play Gilman City at 7:30 tonight. The R-5 girls will take on North Daviess at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Gilman City Boys
vs. Ridgeway
The Gilman City boys fell short in their effort to move on in the tournament, dropping a 56-40 decision to Ridgeway.
The Hawks had the lead after the first quarter, 13-10, with Ridgeway coming back to take a one-point advantage at the half, 26-25. The wheels came off for Gilman City in the second half as the Hawks were outscored by the Owls, 34-15.
Blake Johnson had 18 points to pace Gilman City. Teammate Kyle King added 10 points.
North Harrison was led by David Claycomb with 16 points.
Ridgeway moves on to meet the winner of tonight’s Newtown-Harris-Pattonsburg game at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Gilman City will take on the loser of that contest at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cainsville Girls
vs. North Daviess
Cainsville got a 43-40 win over North Daviess. The game went back and forth throughout, with North Daviess coming up just short in the fourth quarter.
Cainsville was led by Brooke Merick with 16 points. Kaylynn Osman had 14 points.
Jaclyn Ray scored 26 points for North Daviess.
Cainsville will take on Newtown-Harris at 4:30 tonight. North Daviess will meet the Grundy R-5 girls at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Pattonsburg Boys
vs. Winston
A big fourth quarter came up just short for the Winston boys, who fell to Pattonsburg, 44-39.
Pattonsburg was up at halftime, 20-15, and then tacked on five more points to lead in the third quarter to take a 31-21 advantage heading into the final period of play. Winston’s offense scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
Jordan Talbert scored 18 points for Pattonsburg while Jeff Pardun put in 10 points.
The Pattonsburg boys will meet Newtown-Harris at 6 o’clock tonight while Winston plays Gilman City at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
