THS Boys
The Bulldogs managed just one basket and a total of four first-quarter points, trailing 10-4 after one period. Logan Epperson and DeAndre Vandevender combined for eight points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs scored 14 points and went into halftime trailing, 23-18
“We started off slow, but picked up the pace in the second quarter,” Head Coach Lyle Best said. “In the second half we played solid defense and our offense improved.”
At halftime, THS decided to try and get the ball inside. Junior Kyle Hoyt was the primary beneficiary, scoring 10 points in the third and fourth quarters. The Bulldogs also began limiting Marceline’s second-chance points with improved rebounding.
“The guys did a good job of getting Kyle the ball,” Best said.
THS cut Marceline’s lead down to 31-29 after three quarters. Tyler Brinkley and Josh Lisle each hit fourth-quarter three-pointers as the Bulldogs tied the game at 43-43.
Point guard Derek Miller and Hoyt took control of the game in the overtimes. Miller hit a pair of three-pointers and scored 11 points in the extra periods. Miller finished the game with 13 total points.
Hoyt also kept a hot shooting hand with eight points in the overtimes and finished with a team-high 20 points.
“Kyle Hoyt came up with 18 points in the second half,” Best said. “Derek hit some big shots in overtime for us and DeAndre had a nice complete game for us as well.”
Vandevender had six points in the first half and finished the game with a total of 10 points. Epperson finished with eight points. Lisle had six points, Brinkley had five points and T.J. Ireland added two points.
“It is a nice win,” Best said. “Marceline has improved a lot this season and we really had to battle to get this win.”
The boys improve to 6-11 overall and will travel to Lawson on Monday. The junior varsity boys will play at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity boys game to follow.
THS Girls
The Lady Bulldogs could not match Marceline’s early-game intensity as the Lady Tigers led 25-16 heading into the second half.
“Marceline is a good team and we did not come out and match their intensity in the first half,” Head Coach Kris Ockenfels said. “Anytime you don’t do that on the road you are in trouble.”
Trenton’s defense picked up in the second half, however, the Lady Bulldogs never could get their offense on track. Marceline outscored THS 12-10 in the third quarter and in the four quarter the two teams combined for only 10 points.
“I thought we played much better in the second half, especially on defense,” Ockenfels said. “We just didn’t get our offense rolling.”
Kari Shiflett led Trenton with 13 points and Brittany Lynch added 10 points.
Emily Holt led Marceline with 20 points.
he Lady Bulldogs fall to 9-9 overall and will host Lathrop on Monday. The junior varsity girls play at 6 p.m., with the varsity girls game to follow.
