Area Teams See Action Over The Weekend

Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, HDC Conference basketball teams were in action over the weekend.
The Newtown-Harris and Tri-County teams picked up a pair of wins on Friday night while Grundy R-5 and Gilman City split two contests with their opponents. Tri-County also played on Saturday, losing both the boys’ and girls’ third-place games in the Osborn Tournament.

Newtown-Harris
vs. Winston
The Lady Tigers had little trouble with the Winston girls, taking a 70-38 victory. Newtown-Harris led after the first quarter, 18-8 and was up 37-22 at the half. The Lady Tigers were ahead 53-33 after three quarters of play.
N-H had four players in double figures, led by Krista Abernathy and Heather Simpson with 15 points each. Abernathy also had nine steals. Jessica Huffman had 12 points and seven steals while Katie Mino collected 10 points and eight rebounds. Jaimie Robinson also had eight rebounds.
The Lady Tigers are 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the HDC.
It was nearly the same story for the Newtown-Harris boys, who grabbed a 76-26 win over Winston.
The Tigers took a 29-9 first quarter lead and never looked back, leading 56-19 at the half. They outscored Winston in the fourth quarter, 5-0.
K.J. Cool led the N-H scoring with 21 points while Tyler Busick scored 14 points and had nine rebounds. Andy Busick added 13 points and six assists. Brandon Coin had eight rebounds.
The N-H boys are 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the HDC.
The Newtown-Harris teams host Novinger tonight.
Tri-County
vs. Cainsville
The Tri-County girls came up on the winning end of an HDC matchup against Cainsville, 63-30.
The Lady Mustangs dominated from the start, taking a 15-4 lead and continuing to lead throughout the contest. They outscored Cainsville 24-15 in the second quarter and 24-11 in the second half.
Taryn Dustman led the T-C scoring with 26 points while Bailey Huston added 20 points.
In the boys matchup, T-C had little trouble with Cainsville, 77-29.
The Mustangs dominated from the start as they were up 20-4 in the first quarter. T-C led at the half, 48-13, and were up 73-21 to start the fourth quarter.
Bruce Sweet had 28 points to lead Tri-County while Gib Wray added 15 points. Beau Wells scored 14 points. Cainsville was led by Levi Chaney with 10 points.
Grundy R-5
vs. Linn County
The Grundy R-5 boys continue to roll, this time taking an 81-67 win over Linn County.
The Panthers jumped out to a 16-12 first quarter lead and were up 39-28 at the half. R-5 then outscored Linn County in the final two periods, 42-39, to get the win.
Kyle Larson had 45 points and 15 rebounds for the Grundy R-5 boys. Colby Searcy scored 13 points and had five assists and nine steals. Logan Jackson put in 12 points and collected 10 rebounds and seven assists while Nick Lentz had six points and six rebounds. Tyler Jackson had five points and seven assists.
Wes Allnutt led Linn County with 24 points. Jason Grismore scored 20 and Jake Oder had 13.
The boys are 10-4 overall.
In the girls game, Linn County outscored R-5 in the first quarter, 21-0, and never trailed. Grundy R-5 scored two in the second, four in the third and four in the fourth, falling to Linn County, 77-10.
Heather Vivone had four points and five rebounds for the Lady Panthers. Whitney Bennett led Linn County with 21 points while Jaime Guffey scored 14 points.
The Grundy R-5 teams will host Newtown-Harris on Friday night.
Gilman City
vs. North Harrison
The Gilman City girls picked up a win over North Harrison, 48-23.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and held the advantage throughout. Gilman City was up at the half, 33-11, and led 40-13 to start the final period of play.
Abbie Herrold led the scoring for Gilman City with 11 points. Crystal Cook had 10 points for North Harrison.
The Gilman City boys lost their game in overtime, 54-53.
The lead see-sawed back and forth throughout the contest, with Gilman City up 12-6 after one period, while North Harrison took the halftime lead, 23-21. Gilman City dominated the third quarter and took a 41-35 lead heading into the final quarter of regulation. North Harrison outscored Gilman City in the overtime period to get the win.
Blake Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Hawks while teammate Kyle King added 16 points. North Harrison was led by Nathan Lisle with 21 points.
The Gilman City teams will take part in the Gilman City Tournament this week. The boys will take on the Gallatin JV at 8 o’clock tonight while the girls drew a bye and will play the winner of the Stet-Gallatin JV game at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Osborn Tournament
The Tri-County girls and boys both dropped third place games in the Osborn Tournament on Saturday.
The Tri-County boys fell to DeKalb, 60-44, while the girls lost to Kansas City Lutheran, 65-46.
Strong second and fourth quarters proved to be the undoing for Tri-County, which found themselves down at the half, 29-19. The Mustangs pulled to within three points at the end of the third quarter, 36-33, but were outscored in the final period, 24-11.
“We gambled on defense and they hit all of their shots (in the fourth quarter,” Coach Terry McCollum said.
Beau Wells scored 13 points to lead Tri-County while Trevor Ward added 12 points. Zach Meyer had 28 for DeKalb.
In the girls game, Tri-County led at the half, 32-30, but saw themselves outscored in the final two periods, 35-14, to take the loss.
Bailey Huston scored 19 points for Tri-County while Lauren Waterbury added 10 points. Kansas City Lutheran was led by Hannah Denk with 28 points.
The Tri-County teams are in the Gilman City Tournament this week. The girls will play North Daviess at 9 p.m. on Tuesday while the boys take on Breckenridge at 6 p.m., also on Tuesday.
