Efforts are under way to replace the city’s three “Welcome to Trenton” signs at the entrances to town with more permanent structures.
Members of the Trenton City Council on Monday night reviewed a proposed design that would be constructed of brick and concrete, which promoters say would last much longer than the wooden ones currently located at the entrances to Trenton on Highway 6 West, Highway 6 East and Highway 65 North.
The design was presented by Ted Druckenmiller of the Trenton Chapter of the Green Hills Master Gardeners, which is promoting the replacement of the signs and has agreed to assist with the effort to do so. Druckenmiller told the council that with the community celebrating its 150th birthday this year, now would be a good time to consider replacement of the current signs with new ones.
The cost to construct and erect the signs has been estimated at around $8,000, with some of the labor and materials being donated. Cass Fuller has developed the design and has agreed to provide his labor on the lettering. The Master Gardeners have agreed to maintain landscaping around the sign and during the discussion, other possible sources for donations were also identified.
Druckenmiller noted that the committee working on the design decided to use the wording “Trenton Welcomes You” rather than “Welcome to Trenton” in an effort to make the sign more personal. He said that any suggestions from the public about the signs would be welcomed.
No action was taken by the council following the presentation, although several council members expressed their appreciation to the Master Gardeners for their work and taking on the project.
