“Adrian, Sherwood and Butler each have a few state-ranked kids while Knob Noster has several,” Head Coach Bill Hill said. “This tournament gave us the opportunity to go head-to-head with those kids who we will probably not see again until the state tournament.”
THS had six wrestlers reach the finals and three of them earned first place. The Bulldogs also earned a third place, a fourth place and five fifth places.
“We hadn’t had a contest for nearly a month and most of our kids got five matches,” Hill said. “It was almost like starting the season again. We saw room for improvement at times but, overall, we wrestled pretty well.”
Finals
Skyler Barron rolled through his three pool matches on his way to the finals at 125 pounds. The finals match was a replay of last season’s state finals at 119 pounds, a match that Barron won.
Barron was able to get a victory again in the championship match, this time beating Hawkins of Knob Noster by regular decision, 7-2. In pool wrestling, Barron pinned Stevens of Butler, 1:24; pinned A. Talley of Adrian, 0:46; and pinned E. Edwards of Sherwood, 1:27. In the semifinals, Barron pinned E. Cutolo of St. Pius, 2:15.

Zach Kinnison, at 285 pounds, was Trenton’s third champion. He pinned his way through his pool matches and then won by major decision in the semifinals. Kinnison pinned Z. Stern of Knob Noster in the finals, 5:26, it was Kinnison second win over Stern in the tournament.

“I had hoped we could stay with Knob Noster as a team, but we did not come up with as many top four finishers as we needed,” Hill said. “Not having a 103-pounder while Knob Noster’s 103 scored about 20 points also resulted in about half the team point spread.”
Kyle Harkins, at 112 pounds, had a pin in pool action and win by fall in the semifinals. Harkins ran into defending state champion K. Luzano of Knob Noster in the finals. Luzano scored a two-point takedown in all three periods and won by regular decision, 6-0.

“Harkins finished second to Luzano from Knob Noster who was a state champion last season,” Hill said. “Moore and Tabbert were each disappointed with their finals matches. I feel confident that we will see different results next time we see those opponents.”
