Robert W. Barnes, an 84-year-old former Trenton resident, died at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at the Levenworth National Cemetery at Levenworth, KS. A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007 at the Whitaker-Eads Funeral home in Trenton. Open visitation began today (Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007) at the funeral home.
Mr. Barnes was born on March 8, 1922 in Sidney, IA, the son of Wallace Dale Barnes and Ethel Leona Cartmill. He was married on May 9, 1942 in Albany to Lillian LeeWanna Needham. He farmed in Iowa for many years before World War II. He was inducted into the Army on Dec. 29, 1942 at Oakland, CA, serving as a tank operator and serving in the European Theater. During the “Nordwind” attack, which was a large scale German offensive attack, he was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was liberated and discharged on Dec. 6 1945 in Fort Ord, CA. He returned to farming in Iowa until moving to Torington, WY, then moving to Trenton in 1952. In Trenton he farmed as well as working for Trenton Foods, Stone Motor Company, Trenton Bowl, the Trenton Milk Plant and the Trenton Water Plant. He was a member of the Hodge Presbyterian Church as well as a life member of the American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis Barnes and his wife, Jodi, of Chillicothe, Randy Barnes and his wife, Jane, of Windsor Heights, IA and Robert Lee Barnes and his wife, Chris, of Eagle Rock; a daughter, Babette B. Baker and her husband, Kent, of Marion, IA; two sisters Mildren Doyle of Shenandoah, IA and Ethel Cook of Essex, IA; a half-brother, Marlin Barnes of Arizona; five half-sisters, Doris Peterson of Michigan, Iris Williams of California, Wilma Barnes of California, Marilyn Barnes of Nebraska and Margarite Hardin of Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe Barnes; an infant brother; a half-brother, Elmer; and a half-sister, Shirley.
The family suggests memorials to the American Legion. They may be left at or mailed to the Whitaker-Eads Funeral home at 813 Custer St., Trenton, MO 64683.
