Funeral services for Gene Mallette will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 at the Newtown Christian Church in Newtown. His three sons, Kent, Kirk and Kim Mallette, and his son-in-law, Denny Daum, will officiate.

A family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006) at the Newtown Christian Church.
Burial will be in the Newtown Cemetery, following military graveside rites. Arrangements are under the direction of the Payne Funeral Home of Galt.
Mr. Mallette, an 82-year-old resident of Newtown, died unexpectedly at his home at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006. He was a retired long-time teacher at the Newtown-Harris School.
Mr. Mallette was born Oct. 2, 1924 at Puxico, the son of Raleigh and Rosa Eason Mallette. He was raised at Puxico and graduated from high school there. He then joined the United States Army and served with the 2nd Infantry during World War II. He was wounded in France and received numerous awards from the Army, including the Purple Heart. After the war, he attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, earning his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1951.
On Aug. 20, 1950, he was married to Pat Davis at Newtown. She survives him of the home.
Mr. Mallette taught at Kirksville, Milan, Spickard and Mercer before teaching at Newtown. He later served as principal and industrial arts instructor at Newtown until his retirement. He earned several additional degrees including a master’s degree in Industrial Education and an Educational Specialist degree at Truman State University. He also received his master’s degree, education specialist, industrial arts and administration degrees. He and his wife owned and operated Mallette’s Sundry in Newtown for several years and also farmed, in addition to teaching. He was a devout Christian, loving husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Mallette was an active member of the Newtown Christian Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher, deacon and elder over the years. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans and a 50-year-member of the Masonic Lodge. He served on the board of directors at Central Christian College of the Bible at Moberly. He also served on the Sullivan County Library board for 29 years and in the past had been a Boy Scout and 4-H leader.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Mallette is survived by a daughter, Teresa Daum and her husband, Denny of Newtown; three sons, Kim and his wife, Angela of Ft. Worth, TX, Kirk and his wife, Debbie of Unionville, and Kent and his wife, Julie of Webster Groves; 11 grandchildren, including Amanda, Caleb, Gracie, Natalie, Jason, Kali, Chelsea, Daniel, Becca, Adam and Emily; and three great-grandchildren, Gracie Claire, Cole and Tate.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mallette was preceded in death by four brothers, Buell, Silvan, Milford and Weldon, and three sisters, Vivian Green, Celest and Lois.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to either the Newtown Christian Church or the Central Christian College at Moberly.
